Fort Eustis Boulevard Bridge Construction
Steel Girders Now in Place
On Thursday, September 22, lane and ramp closures took place overnight on Fort Eustis Boulevard and I-64 to allow for construction work on the westbound bridge.

Crews worked through the night to erect the structural steel girders on the westbound span of the bridge. The girders for the eastbound span were set last month on August 17.

FAQ: What Are Those Clearings For?
Stormwater Management Basins
Many have inquired about the three cleared areas of land traveling eastbound along the I-64 Widening Segment I corridor near the Fort Eustis exits.

All three areas have been cleared for complex wet and dry stormwater management ponds that are used to manage and filter stormwater runoff.

Stormwater facilities are used to provide flood control, protect from erosion, and provide a measure of water quality treatment.

Traffic Impacts
Lane Closures:
Weeknight east- and westbound alternating single-lane closures, Sundays through Thursdays, beginning as early as 9 p.m. and ending at  5 a.m. the following morning between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Lee Hall (exit 247).

One travel lane in each direction will remain open to traffic at all times.  All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.

Traveling in the Work Zone:
Westbound truck traffic on Interstate 64 is now restricted to the right lane between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Yorktown Road (exit 247). A reduced 55mph speed limit is also in effect 24/7 in this area in both the east- and westbound directions. Once construction activity begins in Segment II, the reduced 55mph speed limit will be extended to Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway).
Alternate Routes:
Beat the backups and find alternate routes around the work zone by viewing the Alternate Routes Map now available on the I-64 Widening web site.
REDUCED SPEED AHEAD
Please obey the reduced 55mph speed limit which is in effect 24/7 in both the east- and westbound work zones of the project between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Lee Hall (exit 247). Once construction activity begins in Segment II the reduced 55mph speed limit will be extended to Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway/Marquis Center Parkway) near exit 242.
