Benefit for former officer's family
Hockey game on Jan. 20 to support Officer Harper Children's Memorial Fund

Come see your favorite former Detroit Red Wings take the ice against members of the Novi Police and Fire Departments at the fourth annual Victory Benefit hockey game on at 7pm on January 20 at Novi Ice Arena.

Tickets are just $10 and proceeds from the game will go to the Officer Harper Memorial Children's Fund. Officer Tim Harper, who had been with the Novi Police Department for more than 25 years, died in September at his South Lyon home. He left behind a daughter who attends Michigan State University and a son at South Lyon High School.

The hockey game itself is always a good time! Previous games have included Red Wings stars Darren McCarty, Mickey Redmond, Larry Murphy, Manny Legace, Sergei Samsonov and many others.

Annual address takes place Thursday, March 9, Suburban Collection Showplace

Mayor Bob Gatt has earned quite the reputation for his annual State of the City Address, and early word is that 2017's version could be the best yet.

This year's address will take place at 7:30am on Thursday, March 9 at the Suburban Collection Showplace.  Tickets are $25 per person or $225 for a table of 10 and can be purchased at cityofnovi.org. Those wishing to hear the Mayor's speech by not join in the breakfast may attend at 8:45am free of charge.

If you cannot make the event but would still like to watch, it will be livestreamed on cityofnovi.org and the City of Novi Facebook page.

Ensure your child is riding safely
Free car seat inspections, 9-noon on Saturday, January 21 at Fire Station #4

Be certain your child is riding properly in their car seat by having it inspected or installed by a certified technician from 9-noon on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Novi Fire Station #4, 49375 Ten Mile Road.
 
The Novi Fire Department has four certified and licensed Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff ready to provide the most updated information and a free check of your child seat and, if necessary, perform a complete child seat installation.
 
Those who want their seat installed or checked are asked to bring the vehicle's owners manual, the car seat manual, and, if possible, the child who will use the safety seat.
 
The technicians also will share some important information including:
  • The steps of restraint as the child grows (rear- to forward-facing car seat, forward-facing harnessed seat to a booster seat and booster to an adult safety belt)
  • Benefits of riding properly restrained, including all adults
  • Safety in and around the vehicle (never leaving children unattended, walking around the vehicle before moving, etc.)
  • State laws and best practice recommendations for occupant safety
No appointment necessary, but appointments can be made by visiting cityofnovi.org or calling 248.735.5673. The checks should only take about 25 minutes to complete.

Special 2-for-1 price being offered for February 4 class
Police

Take advantage of a special 2-for-1 offer and obtain your Michigan Concealed Pistol License at the Civilian Pistol Safety Class on February 4 at the Novi Police Department.

Registration forms are available online and at the Novi Police Department. For this class, the department is offering a 2-for-1 special for any two or more people registering together. Completed registration forms and the $150 course fee (cash or money order), may be returned to the Novi Police Department. Class size is limited, and all participants are subject to a criminal background check.

The course takes place from 8am-5pm at the Novi Police Department Training Center located at 45125 Ten Mile Road. The classroom portion takes place in the morning, and after lunch, participants will move to the Novi Firearms Training Center to complete the training.

Students must bring their own equipment, including a personal handgun, 100 rounds of ammunition, safety glasses, shooter's earmuffs or ear plugs, a pen or pencil, a baseball cap, and wear loose comfortable clothing to participate in the course. Participants must be 21 years old and do not have to be a Novi resident to attend.
