I Am The Flame, with
The Right To Peace

This year's #peaceday celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "The Right to Peace- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70."

Dear Peacebuilding Community,

The Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) newsletter will accompany you to and beyond September 21, 2018, the International Day of Peace which is right around the corner. On this journey we will provide highlights of the United Nations, Pathways To Peace and other NGOs. We will also highlight a few of the extraordinary Peacebuilders who are contributing to a Culture of Peace in unique ways through daily determination, skills, practice, and patience. Our first such Peacebuilder is Irene Kai, co-founder of the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission and former Pathways To Peace Director.

On September 21, in an international ceremony, the World Peace Flame will be installed and lit in the base of the obelisk in the Thalden Pavilion at the Southern Oregon University Sustainability Center. Support is welcomed.

I Am the Flame Irene Kai

I am honored to be telling my story as a peacebuilder, and an immigrant in the United States of America. I met my partner David Wick in 1999. He worked with Avon Mattison and Joanie (Misrack) Ciardelli since 1980 on the foundation of Pathways To Peace (PTP) which became a United Nations NGO. Pathways To Peace then developed Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and works with the U.N. Centre for Human Rights, U.N. Centre for Human Settlements, UNESCO, UNICEF and other Agencies. It is also an official Peace Messenger of the United Nations.

I arrived in New York's Chinatown from Hong Kong in 1965 at the age of fifteen, not knowing how to speak English. I learned quickly that for me to survive, I had to learn the language, get educated and assimilate into the American culture. In the process, I learned to be a keen observer of both cultures. I soon recognized and retained what serves me. (Please click here for complete story)

MODEL STUDENT * Katelyn Grano of Mater Dei Prep is one of 10 young people who will serve on a youth committee at the United Nations at the end of the summer

Congratulations to Pathways To Peace UN Youth Representative,
Katelyn Grano!

In May, Katelyn was selected as one of only ten members of the prestigious United Nations Department of Public Information's NGO Youth Representatives Steering Committee.

Katelyn is a high school senior at Mater Dei Prep, Middletown, New York, and has been a Pathways To Peace Representative to the UN for several years. Through her work at the UN, Katelyn has established herself as an effective international leader and Peacebuilder. She was also recently selected to serve as co-chair of the 67th UN Department of Public Information's NGO Conference. With the theme "We the Peoples ... Together Finding Global Solutions for Global Problems". The NGO conference will be held Aug. 22-23 at the UN headquarters in New York City, with some 3,000 representatives attending from around the world.
"As someone who has a great appreciation for the United Nations and all of the work that it does to better the world, I am honored to have been selected a member of the DPI NGO Youth Representatives Steering Committee," Katelyn said. "I am eager to start my work under the secretary general, António Guterres, and to see what we can do to get more  youth involved in global  issues."

The NGO Youth Representatives Steering Committee serves as an advocacy platform to unite young people within or leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or youth organizations that work with the Department of Public Information. Katelyn, along with other youth leaders, will be advising the Department on strategies to engage young people around activities related to the work of the United Nations.
Katelyn is a student participant in Mater Dei Prep's Emerging Global Leaders Institute, and was a lead youth officer. The Institute is headed by George Anthony, who is a primary representative for UN DPI/NGO Pathways To Peace.

"Katelyn is an extraordinary individual who understands altruism on so many levels. Peace building requires the dedication of pouring your heart and your efforts into creating positive change. Through her work ... she has demonstrated that willingness toward her community and the environment. We will benefit from her efforts as a result of her selection to the DPI/NGO Executive Steering Committee. The best is yet to come." - George Anthony, Emerging Global Leaders Institute and Pathways To Peace Primary Representative to the United Nations.

Katelyn recognizes the role of the Emerging Leaders Institute in supporting her leadership.  "The opportunities that both Mr. Anthony and the United Nations have given me are irreplaceable and have given me so many new experiences and knowledge for college and my future career. I am extremely grateful to be given this amazing opportunity at such a young age," Katelyn said.

The Pathways To Peace Team is grateful and delighted for you, Katelyn! We're glad you're on our team and can't wait to see what's next!

Pathways To Peace at the United Nations
The Pathways To Peace UN CSW62 Panel Presentation on
Women and the Media Continues to Make a Difference!

The sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 12th through March 23rd, 2018.

This year's panel presentation, based on the UN CSW62 theme, was on Women and the Media. Sheva Carr, Co-Vice President of Pathways To Peace and CEO of Heart Ambassadors and The Fyera Foundation, brought together a stunning line-up of prestigious, inspiring, and innovative women!

The panel presentation culminated with a standing ovation from the "standing room only" audience. We have since learned that the presentation inspired a graduate student to base her Master's Thesis on our panel, and an HBO executive decision maker and CBS employee were reported to be profoundly impacted by it. We expect to hear more ; it might be only the beginning!

We are delighted to provide you with the video of the UN Commission on the Status of Women panel from this year, https://youtu.be/nQWbFvFeOF0

About Pathways To Peace and the Culture of Peace Initiative

Incorporated in 1983, Pathways to Peace (PTP) is an international organization dedicated to making Peace a practical reality in our world today. PTP is an official Peace Messenger of the United Nations and has Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. PTP works locally and globally, inter-generationally and multi-culturally, to promote Peacebuilding, Peace education, and to collaborate with other organizations in initiatives that help further the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI).

With participants from around the world, the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) is a cooperative local-global Peacebuilding Initiative uniting the strengths of organizations, networks, projects and people to realize a Culture of Peace for the Common Good. The CPI also serves as a vehicle for bringing to light many previously unseen and unheard Peacebuilders working along diverse paths, who are embodying the emerging Culture of Peace within Humanity.  The annual highlight of the Culture of Peace Initiative is the International Day of Peace, which provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and nations to work together, on a shared date, to create practical acts of Peace with a year-round impact.
