I Don't Want to Go to College...Now What?

Dear EIF friend, supporter, scholar & partner,

In 2004, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated that nearly half (about 45 percent) of all job openings in the next 10 years would be in the broad occupational categories that are mostly middle-skill. For comparison, the demand for low-skill workers was projected to account for 22% of the jobs and high-skill workers were expected to account for 33% of the market.

Since middle-skill careers almost always require some additional training beyond high school and account for almost half of all employment opportunities, this may at least in part explain the increase in enrollment at trade / technical schools and community colleges. Be it a 2-year program, specialized skill training or certifications, trade / technical schools or community colleges, each provide the education frequently needed to secure a middle-skill position.

Thinking about career options and where to pursue your secondary education? In addition to traditional 4-year colleges, don't overlook the option to pursue your secondary education at a trade / technical school or a community college. The benefits of these post-secondary institutions may surprise you.

Spruce Timberwolves

     H. Grady Spruce
Principal: Irene Aguilar
Advisor: Efrain Nieto Jr.

With the collaboration of EIF staff and the campus administration at H. Grady Spruce we have been able to achieve great things in just the few months since the academic year began. Spruce is blazing the path and boasts a 100% submission rate of college applications among its 235 seniors. Mr. Nieto, EIF Advisor at Spruce, has shown great initiative in achieving the campus and district goals and also going above and beyond the call of duty. He has created a scholarship bulletin board so that students can easily pick up a scholarship application when they visit the EIF office with completing. Spruce also hosted a group of Deloitte volunteers that assisted 9th and 10th graders complete career assessment tests and resumes. Pearl G. Fracchia, counselor at Spruce states, "Together, we focus on SAT/ACT and college preparation for everyone. The EIF room acts as a wonderful gathering place for our students who want to apply for college admission and college scholarships. It is always a busy and active location to visit and we are pleased that we have such a strong partnership with EIF to help our Spruce students." We are appreciative to be back at H. Grady Spruce this year and look forward to what we can accomplish together.

A Message from EIF Student

Dalia Espinoza
Seagoville High School
Elected official for the City of Seagoville's 3rd Annual Government Day
Dalia is a senior at Seagoville High School with high aspirations for her future. At such a young age, she has many accomplishments under her belt. Dalia currently ranks third in her class, is a senior class officer, and is part of the dance team. She will be a first generation college goer and as such does not have the ability to ask family members for help in the college process. Because of this, the help she has received from Education is Freedom has been invaluable. Dalia takes advantage of all the resources that EIF has to offer and knows that her EIF advisor is there to answer any questions. Dalia states, "I encourage my classmates to visit the EIF office to complete college and scholarship applications. They have helped me in so many ways and I try to advocate to all my friends to visit EIF!" She has taken the difficulties in her life and used them to propel her forward. Dalia started her own nail/hairstyle business,
Sparkle, which has peaked her interest to major in business once she begins her post-secondary education at the University of Texas at Arlington in the Fall of 2015.

Deloitte
Deloitte volunteers along with the H. Grady Spruce administration and EIF staff all collaborated to make this a successful event
Thanks to the Deloitte volunteer team we were able to serve 76 students at H. Grady Spruce High School. Each student completed a career assessment, a resume, and received invaluable college & career advice from Deloitte volunteers. Most of the students left their session with 1-3 different career choices and the knowledge of how to reach their goals. Thank you for taking the time to make an undoubtedly huge impact on the lives of these students!
