I Shutter the Thought
Hurricane Season Prediction
Part of living in a community includes that shared sigh, when the latest weather forecast comes out. If you're in Wisconsin, there are predictions on how bad the snow in winter will be. If you're in Oklahoma, neighbors wonder about the intensity of spring tornadoes. Along the Gulfcoast, we anticipate the hurricane season forecast. This year, we have already experienced unusual activity, with Hurricane Alex occurring in the Atlantic in January. The initial prediction is lower than average hurricanes. However, it is still too early to tell because forecasters are monitoring a potential change in the current El Nino pattern, which could make the Atlantic more favorable for generating powerful storms.
With the season running from June 1 - November 30, it is best to get your preparations ready in the event of a disaster. Florida still holds the highest chance of being hit by hurricanes.
Majors Home Improvement offers a number of different options to protect your most valuable investment during the hurricane season -- your home. All of our shutters meet Miami-Dade County Building Code requirements. Our shutters are locally manufactured and are custom-made to specifically fit your home. Additionally, hurricane shutters make an existing home very attractive in the home buying market. Financially, it only makes sense to safeguard your investment since prospective home buyers will desire homes with storm protection rather than those without.
Shutter Storm Protection Features
- Rolling Shutters: most convenient; manually roll down or motorized for ease of operation; provide security, light and sound control and insulation; minimal impact on home design.
- Bahama & Colonial Shutters: provide security and control of light and sound with minimal maintenance; great option for second floor openings; custom made; variety of colors.
- Accordian Shutters: popular cost-effective option; provide security and control of light and sound, can be secured from inside or outside the home; can be secured quickly and permanently stored at the sides of each opening in a low profile stack; variety of colors.
- Storm Panels: most economical protection; does require storage and must allow more time to safely and securely install the storm panels prior to an impending storm.

Got a Question? Ask Mike!
Question: Why should I get hurricane shutters? Should I also cover my door? - S. Cloud
Mike's Reply:
Thanks for your question. Living along the Gulf Coast, it is important to get storm ready. This includes protecting your life and home from hurricane force winds and wind-borne debris. Shutters will protect the home structure as well as the contents, people, and pets. If a window is broken through during an active storm, hurricane winds will create intense pressure on the interior walls and upward pressure on the home's roof. This could lead to roof failure and expose the entire contents of the home to the storm. Shutters provide the first line of protection against the devastating effects of a hurricane. It is important to cover doors such as sliding glass doors, french doors, or any door with a majority of glass in it. Also, one should consider reinforcing double doors or garage doors (Source: Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory's Hurricane Research Division).
