Dec 19, 2017      Finger Lakes Connected
Parenting is an interesting thing. Joys and sorrows all bundled up with a big bow of HOPE and FAITH on top! One of my children made a poor decision and the punishment was to be grounded for 5 days and a choice. I'm a big fan of choices. Anyway the choice was to give up the phone or write an essay about why that choice was made and how to better approach that situation the next time it surfaces. I thought for sure the essay would be chosen, but the decision to part with the phone was made. Different generation, I guess.  I was kind of looking forward to reading his essay! Oh well. I just keep thinking to myself, we have them for a short while and then we hope they make the right choices and decisions when they are on their own.  Keeping the Faith! I'm grateful for the joys and the sorrows. I think we all learn and grow more from the latter....Even on the parenting side because how we deal with unpleasant things affects our well being and a lot of life is about not letting outside events disrupt our internal peace.  AHHHHHHhhhh...
Merry Almost Christmas, Everyone!

Outstanding Talent and Performances in our Backyard! (We are NOT just about the day programs)

Did you know that Cobblestone Arts Center runs a day program for adults with disabilities, an arts after school program, community classes in visual art, music, dance and theater, and is home to the region's newest community theater group, The Cobblestone Players?

That's right! All under one roof, (the newest roof houses a beautiful 125-seat theater, lobby and art gallery), community members are welcome to experience the arts in multiple ways. The Medicaid Waivered Day Program, designed for adults with disabilities, runs from Monday-Friday 9am-2pm, and is arts-based and performance driven. Quarterly performances are free and open to the public.

In the evenings the place is a-buzz with fitness classes offered by the crew at Canandaigua Fitness, Suzuki violin lessons from Lyric Arts Academy, and a myriad of activities ranging from rehearsals for upcoming shows, salsa dance lessons, private music instruction, and more! The Center is a true hub for the community and is welcoming to all.

If you haven't yet seen a show, check out www.cobblestoneartscenter.com and see what interests you. There's something for everyone this holiday season!

Need a unique gift idea? Give the gift of live performance! Season subscriptions are both affordable and charitable at the same time! Proceeds from all ticket sales benefit Cobblestone's Celebrating the Arts Day Program for adults with disabilities. That's two gifts in one!

Mom-to-Mom Support Circle to Meet Dec. 28
UR Medicine Thompson Health has launched a new group called the Mom-to-Mom Support Circle based on the need for honesty and support amongst mothers struggling with a mood and/or anxiety disorder that occurs during pregnancy, or after the birth of a new baby. This includes mothers struggling with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Facilitated by Maureen Kellogg of Thompson's Social Work Department, Thompson Health Lactation Consultant/RN Courtney Phillips and a volunteer from the community, the group offers moms a "safe space" to be transparent about motherhood, mental health, and all the little things in between, providing opportunities to talk with others who have been through or are currently walking through this same season of life. The group's next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the OB Classroom at Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish St. For information, call (585) 396-6295.

Victor, Canandaigua face off in FLCC's Commodore Cup hoops charity tournament

For the sixth year in a row, FLCC will host basketball games between high school rivals Canandaigua and Victor to benefit local charities.

The Commodore Cup will be held on Friday, Dec. 22, in Putt Moore Court (the main campus gymnasium), 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. The girls team plays at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:45 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to park in the lot up the hill and behind the main building for a shorter walk to the gym.

The event is named for Commodore Plastics, a foam products company in East Bloomfield. More than $17,000 has been raised to benefit the Victor-Farmington Food Cupboard and the Canandaigua Churches in Action food pantry.  Entry is $5 general admission or $3 with student ID. Funds will also be raised with 50/50 raffles. Several FLCC athletes and coaches will help run the event.

Doug Emblidge, anchor at 13WHAM news in Rochester, will emcee an awards ceremony following the games, while the public address system will be manned by Canandaigua native Pete "The Mayor" Kennedy of Rochester radio station 100.5.
