Maria Gomez

I had nothing left except my four children asking, "What

are we going to do?"

Life has shown me hurdles
Maria Gomez, the guest speaker at the 28th annual Sharing Our Bounty dinner/auction, continues to give thanks for the assistance that she received from Lazarus House. Currently working at Labor Ready, she found a way to give back by writing a grant through her workplace to help fund the programs that assisted her and her children when they found themselves homeless.

Maria Gomez's famiily
When I knocked on the door at the Lazarus House shelter one evening I did not expect the courtesy and respect that I got from staff members. I had lost everything to a fire. Then, on top of that, my life savings was stolen by someone that had taken me into their home. I literally had nothing left except my four children asking, "what we were going to do?" I had to say the three hardest words a person could say to them, "I don't know." Fortunately, I was given a chance to get my life back on track and to be able to feed my children and lay them down on a warm clean bed every evening. The support I received from the people at Lazarus House has changed both my life and my children's lives.

It is very hard when you think that there is no one there to just give you a helping hand, when your own family says, "you can only stay for one day." I cried so hard the first night I could barely see the next day. Then someone told me God will not give you more then you can carry. It's hard to keep a positive outlook when you feel you don't have anything. But, I had a lot that I just did not see in front of my face; four beautiful children on my side - cheering for me, being my support and my future!

While living at Lazarus House, a simple conversation at breakfast would start the day off right when concerned staff greeted me with, "Have a great day, do you need anything?" It caught me off guard, I didn't expect them to be as heartfelt as they were! I was almost afraid to say, "yes," just in case I was told, I'm sorry we can't help you, but that never happened. As long as I live and breathe I will be grateful for the support, prayers and smiles my family and I received during our stay at the emergency shelter.

Life has shown me a lot of hurdles that I have had to climb over, but when faced with difficulty, I stop and think, I can keep going ~ I'm almost there. I believe if you have motivation and determination you can accomplish anything!

Now, I have a good job, wonderful children and three new grandchildren. I can look back and see that my patience and all the hard work to get out of poverty paid off; it shows in the smiles of everyone in my family!

Can you imagine what happens when a guest comes to our door and begins to realize that the future can look brighter? Help families just like the Gomez's in making this happen! Gifts to Lazarus House can be made in a variety of forms, including cash, securities, and real estate or through planned gifts such as bequests, life income agreements, or the Lazarus House Endowment Fund. Gifts to Lazarus House Ministries are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Project Bethlehem

Project Bethlehem helps families in the Greater Lawrence area with gifts for Christmas. Agencies refer to us families in need and we then ask for a wish list of items for Christmas gifts. The families are then "adopted" by compassionate people who are willing to purchase these items, individually wrap them and deliver them to Lazarus House, where they are distributed to the families just before Christmas. To participate go to the link above and fill out the Donor Registration Form.

Giving Tree

The Holiday Giving Tree provides Christmas presents for all the families and individuals who are living in our emergency shelter. For many, it is the first time they are able to give their children a Christmas present. The donation list contains a variety of items, including sizes for clothing, underwear, socks, etc.
