March 2017 Newsletter
President's Message
Dear IABA-SD Members and Friends:

We held emergency elections last month to elect board members for our Legal Task Force Committee. These board members will assist IABA San Diego in addressing the ongoing impact of President Trump's immigration ban and future executive orders that will impact the Middle-Eastern community. We had three incredible attorneys step up to this challenge. I want to thank Roseline Feral, Tina Malek and Mikhak Ghorban for volunteering their time to be on the Legal Task Force Committee. Their combined experience will be a great asset to our organization.

I am looking forward to IABA SD's first general meeting of the year on March 16th. Please come meet the board of directors and join us in a discussion led by our Legal Task Force Committee members regarding the impact of President Trump's immigration executive order. After the meeting, come and mingle with fellow friends over hosted food and drinks. Details of the event are in this newsletter. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Last, but not least, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! This month marks the celebrations for Nowruz, meaning "New Day," the name of the Iranian New Year. Nowruz is on the first day of spring or Equinox. People from diverse ethnic communities and religious backgrounds have celebrated Nowruz for thousands of years. The festivities of Nowruz reflect the renewal of the Earth that occurs with the coming of spring. It is the time to make new beginnings, realize dreams and reach new goals. The IABA SD Board wishes all of you a healthy, prosperous and happy new year.

Yours Truly,

Arezoo Jamshidi, IABA-SD President
MEMBER OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2017
Mikhak Ghorban, Esq.

The San Diego Chapter of the Iranian American Bar Association is pleased to announce Mikhak Ghorban, Esq., as its Member Of The Month for March 2017.

Mikhak has a rich upbringing that saw her spend significant portions of her life in Iran, England, Washington D.C., and San Diego.  A San Diego State graduate and law school graduate of Western State University, Mikhak pursued and accomplished a wide array of achievements in industries within the political sphere, public policy, and ultimately the law.  Originally focusing on the complexities of securities and patent law, Mikhak transitioned her focus to Family and Immigration Law due to the close ties she developed with the local Iranian-American community, which are now her primary practices areas in her current role as Founding Member and Partner of Ashtari & Ghorban, LLP, located in Rancho Bernardo.

Consistent with her passion to better her community as a whole, Mikhak currently serves on the Board of Directors for Mother Attorney Mentoring Association of San Diego (MAMAS), which mentors attorney-mothers on work-life balance.  She also volunteers as an art instructor to general and special-needs students at her local elementary school.

Mikhak sought the guidance of her fellow Iranian-American legal colleagues in establishing her footing in the industry, crediting her membership and involvement in the San Diego Chapter of IABA in promoting her consistent growth as an expert in her field.  Mikhak comments, "I am in daily contact with colleagues whom I have met and with whom I have worked as a result of my membership with IABA. It's a great comfort to be able to reach out to these individuals when I'm in need of a referral or guidance in handling a complex legal matter.  Overall, I feel that these professional relationships have made me a better practitioner. My own firm was established by two Iranian- American female attorneys who are IABA members."

However, Mikhak notes that while she has benefited from the exposure IABA has provided her, she lends the following advice on how to get the best out of your membership: "I think joining a bar association like IABA can be beneficial if you actively participate and take advantage of the services offered. If you just join, but choose not to engage with the other members, you are just wasting your time and money.  Seek volunteer opportunities to help the organization reach its goals.  Find a mentor who is able to guide you through your career, or perhaps you can mentor another who can benefit from your guidance. The kinship in law, as well as in culture and language, is beyond compare."

As for advice Mikhak wishes to impart on the next generation of Iranian-American attorneys practicing in San Diego, Mikhak sensibly advises, "although we live in a big city, we have a small legal community, so take care of your reputation and exude professionalism.  It will serve you well as an attorney and as an Iranian-American member of society."

Please take a moment with us to congratulate Mikhak on her honor as IABA - San Diego's Member Of The Month, and be sure to strike up a conversation with her at the next IABA - San Diego mixer, as her enthusiasm for the practice, kindness in assisting her clients, and wisdom in finding a happy equilibrium between a professional and personal life will surely rub off on you.

"HAFT SEEN" TABLE AT SDCBA
March 20 - 24, 2017
IABA San Diego will display its annual haft seen table in preparation for the new year, or Nowruz, at the San Diego County Bar Association's Bar Center from March 20th through the 24th. We hope you will stop by to see our traditional table and for some sweet treats!

Nowruz is celebrated on the day of the astronomical Northward equinox (first day of spring), which usually occurs on or around March 21st. The festivities of Nowruz reflect the renewal of the Earth that occurs with the coming of spring. It is partly rooted in the religious tradition of Zoroastrianism, the first monotheistic religion that emphasized broad concepts such as the corresponding work of good and evil in the world, and the connection of humans to nature. Zoroastrian practices were dominant for much of the history of ancient Persia (centered in what is now Iran).

Haft-seen or the seven "S's" is a traditional table setting of Nowruz.  The haft-seen table includes seven items all starting with the letter "sin" or "S" in the Perso-Arabic alphabet. The number seven has been sacred in Iran since the ancient times, and the seven dishes symbolize:
  • Sabzeh - wheat or barley sprouts-symbolizing rebirth of nature
  • Samanu - sweet pudding made of wheat germ, a high calorie food with vitamin E-symbolizing strength and preparedness for new year
  • Senjed - dried oleaster wild olive fruit-famously known that under a senjed tree, one may fall in love-symbolizing love and passion for beauty
  • Sir - garlic-symbolizing medicine for better health and wellness
  • Sib - apples-symbolizing natural beauty and health
  • Somāq - dried and granulated Sumac berries are dark lavender-symbolizing (the color of) sunrise and the beginning of a new day
  • Serkeh - vinegar-symbolizing old-age and patience
Many different nationalities in the Middle East and Asia celebrate Nowruz and sometimes substitute or include the following symbolic dishes:
  • Mirror - symbolizing the sky and a self reflection of creation
  • Candles - symbolizing fire and enlightenment, they represent the bringing of light and happiness to life
  • Golab - rose water symbolizing water
  • Goldfish - symbolizing the last month in the astral calendar and its turning inside the bowl reflects the turn of the year and its beginning
  • Painted Eggs - symbolizing creation and fertility

MENTORSHIP/CLERKSHIP PROGRAM
Employers, Mentors & Mentees Needed
Attorneys/Members of the Judiciary:

The San Diego Chapter of IABA will be launching the Mentorship Program at our General Meeting on March 16th.

We are seeking applicants who are interested in serving as a Mentor for the IABA Mentorship Program. The IABA Mentorship Program is designed to offer law students the opportunity to meet, network with, and learn from more senior attorneys. Mentors provide support, advice, encouragement, and even friendship to students.

This is an excellent opportunity to give back to your legal community, and give your mentee a sense of being connected to the larger community where they may otherwise feel lost. If you are interested in serving as mentor, please contact Bita Ashtari.

Also, as part of the  IABA Clerkship Program , our San Diego Chapter would like to partner with local law firms, and state/federal courts and agencies, to facilitate the placement of diversity students--particularly students from the Middle Eastern Law Student Associations (MELSA) of California Western School of Law, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, and the University of San Diego--with  clerkship positions.

As you know,  clerkships  play a major role in securing employment after law school.  For many students and recent grads, law  clerk  positions are the only applicable experience that color resumes when seeking employment. If you, or your place of employment, is interested in interviewing students regarding the IABA Clerkship Program, please contact Matthew Soleimanpour.

Students/Post-Grads:

If you are interested in the opportunity of taking part in the IABA Mentorship/Clerkship Programs, please contact Bita Ashtari to request Mentee Applications and submit your resumes.

Also, please be advised that  JOBS are posted  weekly to our  IABA LinkedIn Group , under the "Jobs" tab.
