ABOUT US

Founded in 1994, the Immunization Action Coalition of Washington (IACW), a program of WithinReach, works to improve the health of the community by minimizing the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases through the optimal use of immunizations across the lifespan. Our priorities for 2016 include vaccine hesitancy; access to immunizations; provider education; and special populations.

Dear IACW Member,

We hope you will save the date for a special quarterly meeting on April 20 in conjunction with National Infant Immunization Week, where we'll feature L.J Tan from the Immunization Action Coalition speaking on the future of immunizations, and recognize immunization champions in our state. In the meantime, we are excited to share some great new resources on adult immunizations: CDC's AdultVaxView, the first-ever National Adult Immunization Plan, and a free training opportunity on standing orders from our partners at the Immunization Action Coalition. Scroll down for the details, and more!

2016 RECOMMENDED IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULES
CDC has published the 2016 Recommended Immunization Schedules for children and adults. Here are some highlights of the changes:
  • HPV: The schedule now addresses the new 9-valent vaccine. Vaccination beginning at age 9 is also recommended for children with a history of sexual abuse or assault.
  • Meningococcal: The Category B (permissive) recommendation for serogroup B vaccination is now on the schedule.
  • Pneumococcal: For adults age 65 and older, the interval between PCV13 and PPSV 23 was changed to "at least 1 year."

We are hard at work creating our convenient laminated schedules, which will be available later this month! In the meantime, you can pre-order yours by emailing [email protected]. Please note these schedules are for healthcare providers. We are happy to direct you to materials that will be better suited to patients and community members.

Take A Stand logo
Our partners at the Immunization Action Coalition will be holding a free training in Seattle on March 15th. Take A Stand™ is a new, national education and training program aimed at improving adult immunization coverage by increasing the use of standing orders programs (SOPs) in medical practices. The project was developed by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) and sponsored by Pfizer, Inc.

The Seattle workshop is scheduled for:
Tuesday, March 15, 10 am - 2:30 pm
The Westin Seattle
1900 Fifth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101

In addition, IAC is offering a year of direct support to a practice following its attendance at the workshop. You can learn more about the workshops and register at www.standingorders.org
Big congratulations to Michele Roberts, Director of the Office of Immunization and Child Profile at the Washington State Department of Health, for receiving the first-ever Rising Star Award from the Association of Immunization Managers (AIM)! The AIM Rising Star Award recognizes a new immunization program manager (in the position for 2 years or less) who demonstrates effective leadership and potential for growth within AIM. It also recognizes a manager that engages with peers and partners nationwide and has demonstrated a desire to impact the broader immunization community. "Michele has already made her mark on the organization. We're thrilled to honor her leadership potential and we expect more great things from her," said AIM Chair, Gerri Yett. Michele is pictured above with Melinda Wharton, Director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
Last month, the National Vaccine Program Office published the first-ever National Adult Immunization Plan. The National Adult Immunization Plan provides an overview of actions needed to be undertaken by federal and nonfederal partners to protect public health and achieve optimal prevention of infectious diseases and their consequences through vaccination of adults. The plan establishes four key goals, each of which is supported by objectives and strategies to guide implementation through 2020:
  1. Strengthen the adult immunization infrastructure
  2. Improve access to adult vaccines
  3. Increase community demand for adult immunizations
  4. Foster innovation in adult vaccine development and vaccination related technologies

You can learn more and download the plan here
