Greetings!

Welcome to the International Association for the Study of Obesity's (IASO) first newsletter of 2011. IASO had a very successful 2010 across it's events' programme and EU projects. IASO is currently working on several European projects with  the PolMark project (Policies on Marketing Food and Beverages to Children) completed in 2010. The project achieved an understanding of current and anticipated regulatory controls. As such a report was published on the range and nature of current advertising regulations on food and beverage marketing to children in 27 EU member states.

The PolMark Project

The International Congress on Obesity (ICO) is the official congress of IASO, held every four years. 2010 was an outstanding year for ICO attracting over 2,300 delegates and a total of 1,600 abstracts were submitted.  The congress was held in Stockholm, Sweden from 11th to 15th July. IASO are now underway in preparation for ICO2014 to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 17th to 21st March 2014.

IASO's Hot Topic Conference, Cancer & Obesity was held in Valencia Spain from 28th to 30th October. IASO, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF International) came together to develop thinking and enhance discussion across the two disciplines of Cancer and Obesity. The conference updated clinicians, epidemiologists, policy makers, nutritional professionals and basic science researchers working in obesity and cancer by challenging them with new ideas and thinking about the biological principals that underline the increased risk of developing certain cancers in obese people.

Everyone at IASO would like to thank all of it's members, delegates, researchers, councils, publications and executive committees for their tremendous contributions and support throughout 2010. We are looking forward to a successful and prosperous 2011.

Policy & Projects

IASO have become increasingly concerned with the exposure of children to energy dense foods and beverages. Following IASO's endorsement of the Sydney Principles in 2006 and its work on the Recommendations for an International Code on Marketing to Children, IASO have endeavoured to work on several projects relating to marketing issues.

IASO'S latest project is to develop international standards for children's exposure to food and beverage marketing - The StanMark Project.

The StanMark project aims to bring together researchers and policy-makers to establish a set of standards for marketing foods and beverages which would be acceptable to the main stakeholders. An analysis of existing standards, regulations and voluntary initiatives will be developed, and proposals for a set of standards for cross-border marketing will be presented at an international meeting in Brussels, March 2011.

The proEU flagject started in February 2010 and concludes in June 2011. It is part-funded by the European Commission's  Directorate for External Relations.
