(November 15, 2016) IBM's journey toward cognitive computing is well documented in the media. Cognitive computing is loosely defined as a simulating of human thought processes in a computerized model. It's a self-learning system that mimics the way the human brain works. Cognitive computing is an evolution of the artificial intelligence work that started in the 1960s. Many people are familiar with IBM's cognitive computing product, called Watson, through the famous Jeopardy episode where Watson won the game in 2011...

November 11, 2016) Sustainable competitive advantage requires relentless adaptation in the way a company serves its clients and its employees. Too often, companies place employee workflows and experiences on the back burner. It's difficult to create an innovative workplace if a company's employees are using tools designed in the 1980s...

(November 10, 2016) Companies are in the midst of embracing the mobile cloud era, but a new era of technology is upon us. This new era of IT encompasses the Internet of Things (IoT), cognitive computing, augmented and virtual reality (VR). I recently interviewed PTC's Jim Heppelmann to learn his thoughts about how augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality would change Industrial IoT. PTC is a technology provider of products such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), the IoT and augmented reality...

(November 9, 2016) Insights are found in data, without data there is nothing to analyze - The Huffington Post gave Donald Trump a 2% chance of winning, The New York Times 15%.  The best polls, prediction markets and analytics predicted a Hillary Clinton victory in the days before the election, yet they were all wrong.  The national media's predictive analytic systems failed catastrophically.  Why?..

(October 31, 2016) Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems are made up of code and algorithms, and as such, they work as fast as computers can process them. Often this means massive amounts of learning can be accomplished every second without stop 24x7x365. Code doesn't need to take weekends off, holidays, or sick time. Code doesn't get tired. It can recognize complex patterns, areas of potential improvement and problems in real-time (aka digital-time). Given these available computing capabilities and speeds, what are executives to do with AI and machine learning, when we live and operate in relatively slow human-time, and work within organizations that work at an even slower pace of organizational-time...

(CIOReview.com, 2016) Critical Areas that Need to be Addressed for M2M and IoT Markets to Flourish Compass Intelligence believes the U.S. market alone will reach $8.5 Billion in Business IoT revenues by 2020, and this does not include things such as enterprise wearables and connected consumer products. This market is critical for transforming business operations, processes, and work flow. There are five critical areas or barriers that need to be addressed before the billions of connected devices can become a reality, including...

(October 25, 2016) About 9 months ago I wrote an article on IBM Mobile Insights discussing what is on the horizon for B2B mobility and IoT, and one of my observations was the carrier becomes less relevant and CONTENT becomes king. As we can see from recent acquisitions by the carriers (Verizon/Yahoo and AT&T/Time Warner) that these predictions are becoming a reality. The issue is the current offerings, service revenue and profitability metrics are becoming less consistent to the carriers' bottom line, and the ONLY way to stay relevant and reach the customer base is to do that with interactive content and changing customer experiences...

Technology Brief is J.Gold Associates' periodic newsletter analyzing important new technologies, changing market conditions, strategic directions, user requirements and critical challenges in creating, deploying and implementing technology solutions.

(November 8, 2016) There's a cheat sheet to rapidly and cheaply migrate Win32 desktop apps to touchable Windows laptops, convertibles and tablets. If your Win32 migration path happens to take you to new, touchable PC hardware running more recent versions of Windows, I have a nice shortcut for you...

(CIO.com - November 17, 2016) While innovation is a goal of most organizations, many IT leaders are hard-pressed to define what innovation is. The CIO Executive Council outlines four essential principles for IT leaders to keep in mind as they develop or hone their strategies...
