MEET OUR NEW FRIAR, FR. PRAVEEN
|
|
Our parish has recently been blessed with the arrival of Fr. Praveen Kumar Turaka, a Capuchin Friar from Andhrapredesh, India. This is Fr. Praveen’s first time in America. “In fact,” he says, “this is my first time out of India! When my Provincial asked me if I wanted to go to America, I said ‘Yes!’”
Fr. Praveen is “excited and happy” to be here. He’s looking forward to experiencing a non-Indian culture. “I truly believe that we can learn from one another,” he explains. “One country can learn from another.”
A Capuchin since 2006 when he took his vows, Fr. Praveen has BA degrees in Philosophy and Theology, and a Master’s Degree in Social Work. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, music and singing – “especially Classical Music,” he explains.
He plans on spending some time practicing with our choirs to learn new music.
Fr. Praveen will take over the training of our young altar servers after he “learns how to do it,” he laughs. “In India we do not allow the young servers to do as much as they can in America. It’s nice to see them at the altar and be involved.”
The oldest of two boys, Fr. Praveen’s mother wanted him to remain close to home after his father’s death. When invited to join a Salesian community, his mother told him “No.” It was too far away. “The Capuchin Friary was much closer,” he says, “and she knew she could visit at least once a month.” His mother is still working for a Pharmaceutical company and Fr. Praveen calls her every day to check on her.
His younger brother was recently married and he and his wife are expecting their first child. “I’m looking forward to being an uncle,” he admits, and is glad that today’s phones and computers will allow him to see pictures of his niece or nephew.
He appreciates the closeness among the Friars. “As Capuchin Friars,” he explains, “there is a brotherhood among us. That’s important when one leaves their family and their country and needs support and understanding.”

PARISHIONER OF THE MONTH – TERRY FISHLEIGH
|
|
Terry Fishleigh and her husband Joe moved from Cleveland, Ohio four years ago “for the second time,” she laughs. They moved to Asheville the first time when Joe accepted a position with station WLOS-TV. After several years, he returned to work in TV back in Cleveland, “and now that our three daughters are grown, we moved back where Joe became the General Manager of WLOS,” she explains.
Terry’s career was in computer technology and then marketing after the girls were grown. “I’m now enjoying having the time to be involved in many different volunteer activities for the community and our parish,” she says. Terry is a Eucharistic Minister, an RCIA sponsor, a Hospice volunteer for CARE Partners, and the new leader of the Praying Ministry here at Immaculate Conception.
Terry is a “cradle” Catholic but found that she wanted to learn more about her Faith while she was a catechist when her daughters were young. That thirst for spiritual growth was strengthened when she was an RCIA sponsor.
“I enjoyed helping others learn and grow spiritually,” she explains, “but I found that I learned and grew in my spirituality too!”
While she has always been “faith filled,” Terry found that faith both challenged and strengthened when her youngest daughter, Juliana, became deathly ill when she was 15. “Our family, our friends, and our parish carried us through that terrible time with their constant support and prayers,” she remembers. “We could feel their prayers with us and that directed us to a closer relationship with God. You have to have that kind of relationship with God to have hope.”
Juliana is now 26 and engaged to be married this spring. She and her sister, Kayla, 28, live in Columbus, Ohio. Terry’s oldest daughter, Melanie, 29, is married with 3 children and a fourth on the way. “She lives in Mills River and being with her and the grandchildren is a joy and one of my favorite things to do,” Terry says.
Terry is looking forward to to learning from the “Prayer Warriors” here. “Those are the many faith-filled and very inspirational ‘pray-ers’ in our parish family,” she explains. “I want to help others see what a difference prayer makes.” She’s open to sharing her faith journey and helping others to see “how prayer carries you through life.”

In here I am doing well with grace of God and with your loving prayers.
I hope you all are doing well.
Right now, here at the seminary, the brothers and sisters are about 350 in number. We are towards the end of the academic year, therefore, busy with final classes and then final exams. We will close the seminary on March 22 and all go for summer vacations and then come back in on June 16th to resume the new academic year.
There is no day that goes without remembering you in my prayers. Because of your prayers and love and in here I am able to do well. I am so much indebted to you.
I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart together with student children who are benefiting from the generous help from you the ICC family. In the last one year they have been helped with the money that you gave me as a gift for a noble cause to help the poor children in their education, therefore, they can come up in their lives and live a dignified life in the society. Thank you so much for being part of a noble cause. May God bless you abundantly.

There was an image from the tragic school shooting in Florida that deeply impacted me. It was a picture of two mothers embracing as they awaited news about their children. The picture was an image of pain and loss. One mother appeared to be screaming in anguish as the other was overcome with grief. One wore a silver heart around her neck and an ashen cross upon her forehead. She began her day as many of us did with experiencing the dichotomy of Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday falling on the same day. Before the day was over she was forced to confront a senseless act of incalculable evil. Now we approach the holiest day in the Church’s year and find that Easter falls on April Fool’s Day. While April Fool’s Day is often filled with harmless moments of deception or trickery, Easter is the one day that people of faith need not worry about deception. In Matthew’s gospel we hear of when Mary Magdalene approached Jesus’ tomb. An angel appeared and to her said, “Do not be afraid…he has been raised as he had said.” There was no deception, only truth. Jesus had broken the chains of death so that we would no longer suffer. He died for our sins and rose for our salvation. As people of faith, we are called to share in Christ’s resurrection each and every day as we recall God’s love and devotion. The pains and challenges of this life will still exist but Easter has become a season of new life and hope.

As we have just begun celebrating Easter and the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, I was moved by the above quote by C.S. Lewis.
What he seems to say in his quote was repeated in the popular reggae song several years ” I Can See Clearly Now the rain has gone…” What Lewis is saying to us is:
As Easter people, we can see and experience the brightness of Hope because of the Resurrection. We can see and experience healing of relationships because of the forgiveness of Jesus of our shortcomings. We can see and experience healing in our bodies and those of our friends and loved ones because of His sacrifice on the Cross.
We can enter His presence, listen to what he has to say to us in His Word, when we attend Mass and worship Him, and then as we pray in the quietness of our homes.
We have the opportunity to share and receive Christs peace with those we attend Mass with and go out to share the Good News of His peace with our families and in our communities.
As Catholics we can receive His love (daily) for us through the Sacrifice of the Mass as we receive His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist, and we can take Him with us to share our hope in Him with others as we live our lives with family, co-workers, and neighbors. As a
Catholic

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter.
The message of Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us – all of us. And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.
In one of Jesus’ revelations to St. Faustina he said: “
The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment
." Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary 699)

Will God Give You An A+??
|
|
When I was in college, I had a professor of Philosophy who began each semester with the same exercise. On that first day of a new semester class, he would introduce himself, and then ask the students to turn to another student and for 30 seconds just look at one another. We were not to speak or do anything, just look at one another. At the end of the 30 seconds, he would ask the class to face him and he would say, “Isn’t it amazing all the disguises God wears?”
He would go on to say that we were each created in the image and likeness of God and that God’s presence was there in that classroom in each and every one of us. “Because we were each God in disguise,“ he would continue, “in this class we will respect one another, listen to one another, care for one another, help one another, accept one another, welcome one another, and at all times love one another.” He told us that he would not grade us on this behavior, but that God would.
I’ve never forgotten that professor nor his lesson on treating one another as “God in disguise.”
Once a week, we come together, as “God in disguise” to worship our God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. How do we treat one another? Do we respect one another? Do we show we care about one another? Do we accept one another for who we are? Are we kind and understanding to one another? Do we help one another? Do we smile and welcome one another?
What kind of grade will God give you? I’m striving for an A+! How about you?

Be My Witness Groups Begin Working On Change
|
|
For many “change” is a scary word. It’s much easier to stay with the status quo than to face trying something new and different – even if that new and different is a much needed improvement for the benefit of all.
At the end of February, over 125 ministry leaders and interested parishioners gathered in nine groups to pray about and discuss ways of bringing positive change to our parish life. These groups will continue to meet individually for the next several months before presenting their ideas and plans to the Stewardship Council of Ministries for approval and then to our pastor, Father Martin for approval and implementation.
The nine groups are: Prayer, Welcoming in the Office Area, Enhancing Bi-lingual Liturgies and Celebrations, Using the Audio-Visual Screens, Welcoming Parishioners – New and Old to the Parish, Volunteerism, Communication, Social and Fellowship Opportunities, and Getting New Parishioners Involved.
Participants have been asked to dream what they would like to see happen, and then come up with a realistic plan to help bring forth the dream. As these groups continue their Spirit led discussions and ideas, you will be seeing some changes and challenges that will be beneficial to all in living out our Parish Mission.
Here’s a beginning change and challenge from the Welcoming group. During this joyful season of Easter, let each of us show that joy in Christ’s Resurrection by

and
saying “Hello” to everyone we encounter at a weekend liturgy.

CONOCE A NUESTRO NUEVO FRAILE, EL PADRE PREVEEN
|
|
Nuestra parroquia ha sido bendecida recientemente con la llegada del Padre Praveen Kumar Turaka, un Fraile Capuchino de Andhra Pradesh, India. Esta es la primera vez del Padre Praveen en Estados Unidos. “De hecho,” nos cuenta, “¡esta es mi primera vez fuera de la India! Cuando mi Provincial me preguntó si quería ir a Estados Unidos, ¡le dije que sí! El Padre Praveen esta “emocionado y feliz” de estar aquí. Está deseoso de experimentar una cultura que no sea hindú. “Sinceramente creo que podemos aprender el uno del otro,” nos explica. “Un país puede aprender del otro.”
Capuchino desde el 2006 cuando tomó sus votos, el Padre Praveen tiene licenciaturas en filosofía y teología, y un grado de maestría en trabajo social. Disfruta leer y cantar en su tiempo libre – “especialmente música clásica,” nos explica. El planea dedicar un tiempo practicando con nuestros coros para aprender música nueva. El Padre Praveen se hará cargo de entrenar a los jóvenes monaguillos en cuanto “aprenda cómo hacerlo,” se ríe. “En la India no permitimos que los monaguillos hagan tantas cosas como en Estados Unidos. Es bueno verlos en el altar y que estén tan involucrados.”
Siendo el mayor de dos hijos, la madre del Padre Praveen quería que permaneciera cerca después de la muerte de su padre. Cuando lo invitaron a unirse a una comunidad salesiana, su madre le dijo, “No.” Estaba muy lejos. “El monasterio Capuchino estaba más cerca,” nos dice, “y ella sabía que podría visitarme al menos una vez al mes.” Su madre aun continua trabajando para una compañía farmacéutica y el Padre Praveen la llama a diario para ver como se encuentra.
Su hermano menor se caso recientemente, y el y su esposa están esperando a su primer hijo. “Estoy deseoso de ser tio,” admite, y está contento que los teléfonos y computadoras de hoy en día le permitirán ver fotos de su sobrina o sobrino.
Aprecia la cercanía entre los frailes. “Como frailes Capuchinos,” nos explica, “hay una hermandad entre nosotros. Eso es importante cuando uno deja a su familia y a su país y necesita apoyo y comprensión.”

PARROQUIANO DEL MES DE ABRIL – TERRY FISHLEIGH
|
|
Terry Fishleigh y su esposo Joe se mudaron desde Cleveland, Ohio, hace cuatro años “por segunda vez,” se ríe. Se mudaron a Asheville la primera vez, cuando Joe aceptó un puesto con la emisora WLOS-TV. Después de varios años, regreso a trabajar a Cleveland, “y ahora que nuestras tres hijas ya están grandes, nos mudamos de regreso a donde Joe se convirtió en encargado general de WLOS,” nos explica. La carrera de Terry se basó en tecnología de computación y después en mercadotecnia cuando crecieron las chicas. “Ahora disfruto tener tiempo para involucrarme en muchas actividades voluntarias para la comunidad y nuestra parroquia,” nos dice. Terry es un ministro de la Eucaristía, patrocinadora de RICA, voluntaria en un hospicio para CARE Partners, y la nueva líder del Ministerio de Oración aquí en la Inmaculada Concepción.
Terry es católica de “cuna” pero se dio cuenta que quería aprender más acerca de su fe en el tiempo que fue catequista cuando sus hijas estaban pequeñas. Esa sed de crecimiento espiritual fue reforzada cuando fue patrocinadora de RICA.
“Disfruté el ayudar a otros a aprender y crecer espiritualmente,” nos cuenta, “¡pero me di cuenta que yo aprendí y crecí espiritualmente también!”
Aunque siempre ha estado “llena de fe”, Terry se dio cuenta que su fe se puso a prueba y se fortaleció al mismo tiempo cuando su hija menor sufrió una enfermedad mortal cuando tenía 15 años. “Nuestra familia, nuestros amigos, y nuestra parroquia nos acompañaron en esos terribles momentos con oraciones y apoyo constantes,” ella recuerda. “Podíamos sentir sus oraciones con nosotros las cuales nos guiaron a una relación más cercana con Dios. Tienes que tener ese tipo de relación con Dios para tener esperanza.”
Juliana ahora tiene 26 años y está comprometida para casarse esta primavera. Ella y su hermana, Kayla de 28, viven en Columbus, Ohio. La hija mayor de Terry, Melanie de 29, está casada con tres hijos y el cuarto en camino. “Ella vive en Mills River y el estar con ella y con los nietos es una alegría y una de mis cosas favoritas,” Terry nos dice.
Terry desea aprender de los “Gurreros de Oración” aquí. “Ellos son las ‘oraciones’ tan inspiradas y llenas de fe de nuestra comunidad,” nos explica. “Quiero ayudar a que otros vean la diferencia que hace la oración.” Ella está dispuesta a compartir su recorrido de fe y a ayudar a otros a ver “como la oración te lleva a través de la vida”

Siempre los recuerdo en mis oraciones, siempre.
Me encuentro bien gracias a Dios y a sus amorosas oraciones. En estos momentos, aquí en el seminario, son casi 350 hermanos y hermanas. Estamos llegando al fin del año académico, así que estamos ocupados con las clases y exámenes finales. Cerraremos el seminario el 22 de marzo y nos iremos a nuestras vacaciones de verano y después regresaremos el 16 de junio para resumir con nuestro año académico. Espero que todos se encuentren bien.
No hay día no los recuerde en mis oraciones. Porque por sus oraciones y amor es que estoy bien aquí. Me siento muy endeudado con ustedes.
Me gustaría agradecerles desde el fondo de mi corazón junto con los chicos que se han beneficiado con la generosa ayuda de ustedes, la familia de la Inmaculada Concepción. En este último año, les hemos ayudado con el dinero que me dieron como donación para una noble causa para ayudar a los niños pobres en su educación, y así superarse y vivir una vida digna en sociedad. Muchas gracias por ser parte de esta noble causa, que Dios los bendiga abundantemente.

Había una imagen del trágico tiroteo en la escuela en la Florida que me impacto demasiado. Era una foto de dos madres abrazándose mientras esperaban noticias de sus hijos. La foto era la imagen del dolor y la perdida. Una madre parecía estar gritando de angustia mientras la otra estaba llena de dolor. Una portaba un corazón plateado en su cuello y la ceniza de la cruz en su frente. Comenzó su día como muchos de nosotros al experimentar la dicotomía de que el día de San Valentín y el Miércoles de Ceniza cayeron el mismo día. Antes de que terminara su día, se vio forzada a enfrentar un acto insensato de maldad incalculable. Ahora nos acercamos al día mas santo del año de la iglesia y nos damos cuenta que Pascua cae el mismo día que el día April Fool’s. Mientras que el día de April Fool’s está lleno a menudo de momentos inofensivos de engaños y artimañas, Pascua es el único día en cual las personas de fe no se necesitan preocupar por engaños. En el evangelio de Mateo escuchamos cuando María Magdalena se acerca a la tumba de Jesús. Un ángel se apareció y le dijo, “No temas… El ha resucitado tal y como lo dijo.” No había engaños, solo la verdad. Jesús rompió las cadenas de la muerte para que ya no sufriéramos. El murió por nuestros pecados y resucitó para nuestra salvación. Como personas de fe, tenemos un llamado a compartir en la resurrección de Cristo cada día mientras recordamos el amor y la devoción de Dios. Los dolores y retos de esta vida aun existirán, pero la Pascua se ha convertido en una época de vida nueva y de esperanza.

Como acabamos de terminar de celebrar la Pascua y la Resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, me conmovió la cita anterior de C.S. Lewis.
Lo que parece decir en su cita se repitió en la popular canción de reggae varios años "Puedo ver claramente Ahora que la lluvia se ha ido ..." Lo que Lewis nos está diciendo es;
Como personas de Pascua, podemos ver y experimentar el resplandor de la Esperanza debido a la Resurrección, podemos ver y experimentar la curación de las relaciones debido al perdón de Jesús de nuestras deficiencias. Podemos ver y experimentar la sanación en nuestros cuerpos y los de nuestros amigos y seres queridos, a causa de Su sacrificio en la Cruz.
Podemos entrar en Su presencia, escuchar lo que él tiene que decirnos en Su Palabra cuando asistimos a Misa y lo adoramos, y luego cuando oramos en la tranquilidad de nuestros hogares.
Tenemos la oportunidad de compartir y recibir la paz de Cristo con quienes asistimos a la Misa y salir a compartir las Buenas Nuevas de Su paz con nuestras familias y nuestras comunidades.
Como católicos podemos recibir su amor (diariamente) por el sacrificio de la misa mientras recibimos su cuerpo, sangre, alma y divinidad en la Eucaristía, y podemos llevarlo con nosotros para compartir nuestra esperanza en él con los demás mientras vivimos nuestras vidas con la familia, compañeros de trabajo y vecinos. Opciones GRATUITAS de Medicare simplificadas

Este taller está diseñado para explicarle acerca de Medicare, cuándo inscribirse y cómo ahorrar dinero. Esta es una presentación GRATUITA del Council on Aging of Buncombe County. Esta presentación informará a las personas que son nuevas con Medicare o en Medicare cómo funciona el programa, qué deben hacer para inscribirse, qué opciones están disponibles, formas en que pueden ahorrar dinero y responder preguntas que puedan tener con respecto al programa. Este evento es para aquellos que ya tienen Medicare, aquellos que cumplen 65 años o son nuevos en Medicare, para aquellos que dejan el seguro del empleador para Medicare y para aquellos que ayudan a los beneficiarios de Medicare con su seguro.

La celebración del día de la Divina Misericordia se celebra el Domingo siguiente, del Domingo de Pascua ( la Resurrección de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo).
El mensaje que nos enseña la Divina Misericordia es del amor, perdón y poder de Dios para todos y cada uno de nosotros Sus hijos; y de igual forma nos confirma que Su misericordia es más grande que todos nuestros pecados.
Por lo tanto confiemos en Cristo y en Su gran misericordia, aprendamos de ella y practiquémosla con nuestro prójimo, y así todos viviremos el gozo de Nuestro
Señor Jesucristo.
En una de las revelaciones a Santa Faustina, El dijo, “
el alma que confiese todas sus culpas y reciba la Santa Eucaristía, obtendrá el completo perdón de sus pecados;
La humanidad no obtendrá paz, hasta que todos se acerquen a la fuente de Mi misericordia”.

Cuando estaba en la universidad, tenía un profesor de Filosofía que comenzaba cada semestre con el mismo ejercicio. En ese primer día de una nueva clase de semestre, él se presentaba a sí mismo, y luego le pedía a los estudiantes que se voltearan hacia otro alumno y durante 30 segundos simplemente se miraran. No debíamos hablar ni hacer nada simplemente mirarnos el uno al otro. Al final de los 30 segundos, le pedía a la clase que lo enfrentara y él le decía: "¿No son sorprendentes todos los disfraces que Dios usa?"
Él continuaba diciendo que todos fuimos creados a la imagen y semejanza de Dios y que la presencia de Dios estaba allí en esa clase en todos y cada uno de nosotros. "Como cada uno de nosotros era Dios disfrazado", así que, "en esta clase nos respetaremos mutuamente, nos escucharemos unos a otros, nos cuidaremos unos a otros, nos ayudaremos unos a otros, nos aceptaremos, nos daremos la bienvenida unos a otros y en todo momento amaos unos a otros. "Nos dijo que no nos calificaría con este comportamiento, pero que Dios lo haría.
Nunca he olvidado ese profesor ni su lección sobre tratarnos unos a otros como "Dios disfrazado".
Una vez a la semana, nos unimos, como "Dios disfrazado" para adorar a nuestro Dios como Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. ¿Cómo nos tratamos unos a otros? ¿Nos respetamos el uno al otro? ¿Mostramos que nos importamos el uno al otro? ¿Nos aceptamos por lo que somos? ¿Somos amables y comprensivos el uno con el otro? ¿Nos ayudamos unos a otros? ¿Nos sonreimos y nos damos la bienvenida unos a otros?
¿Qué clase de calificación te dará Dios? ¡Estoy luchando por un A +! ¿Qué hay de tí?

SEAN PARTE DE UNO DE MIS GRUPOS DE TESTIGOS, EMPIEZAN A TRABAJAR EN UN CAMBIO

Para muchos "cambio" es una palabra aterradora. Es mucho más fácil mantenerse con el status que enfrentar el intentar algo nuevo y diferente, incluso si eso nuevo y diferente es una mejora muy necesaria para el beneficio de todos. A fines de febrero, más de 125 líderes ministeriales y feligreses interesados se reunieron en nueve grupos para orar y discutir formas de traer un cambio positivo a nuestra vida parroquial. Estos grupos continuarán reuniéndose individualmente durante los próximos meses antes de presentar sus ideas y planes al Consejo de Ministros de Mayordomía para su aprobación y luego a nuestro párroco, el Padre Martin, para su aprobación e implementación. Los nueve grupos son: oración, bienvenida en el área de la oficina, mejora de las celebraciones y liturgias bilingües, uso de las pantallas audiovisuales, feligreses acogedores: nuevos y antiguos para la parroquia, voluntariado, comunicación, oportunidades sociales y de compañerismo, y obtener nuevos Parroquianos involucrados. A los participantes se les pidió que soñaran con lo que les gustaría que sucediera, y luego idearon un plan realista para ayudar a que surja el sueño. A medida que estos grupos continúen sus discusiones e ideas dirigidas por el Espíritu, verán algunos cambios y desafíos que serán beneficiosos para todos al vivir nuestra Misión Parroquial. Aquí hay un cambio inicial y un desafío del grupo de bienvenida. Durante esta alegre temporada de Pascua, que cada uno de nosotros muestre esa alegría en la Resurrección de Cristo sonriendo y diciendo "Hola" a todos los que nos encontramos en una liturgia de fin de semana.

Si es así, en cuanto llegue a los 70½ años de edad, puede hacer su usual ofertorio, su donación a los Socialistas Demócratas de América (DSA, por sus siglas en ingles) o cualquier otra donación a la iglesia Inmaculada Concepción o a la escuela católica Inmaculada, directamente desde su cuenta de jubilación individual y así evitar pagar impuestos sobre su donación.
