Strategic Decision Making
Take the Time and Do it Right
   
 
 
Down to the last quarter of the year time to finalize 2017.

Ideas have been brainstormed and commitments have been made to make 2017 the best year ever. We will keep hearing new ideas and thoughts. The average adult makes 35,000 decisions a day. One study shows we make over 200 food-related decisions a day! No wonder we are in a haze and feel like we can't make one more decision. Our brain is working on overload making hundreds of subconscious and conscious decisions.

How do we stay focused? I have found the 5 "M's" help me.
 
  1. Mission- Does this idea/plan/event/program support your Chamber's mission statement? What can be changed to better align with the mission?
  2. Meaningful- Does this matter to the Chamber? Will it add value to the Chamber? Is there someone else that is a better fit for this request/idea/program/event?
  3. Measurable- How will we know if this is successful?
  4. Manageable- Does the Chamber have the time and capacity to accomplish this? Should this be deferred to another year? What needs to change to make this manageable?
  5. Momentous- Will the Chamber look back and remember they have done this? Will you look back and wish you had done this?
If you say no to 2 or more of this questions, just say NO.
 
These take practice by yourself, your staff and your Board. Each person needs to reflect and dive deep with requests, projects, event, and programs.   Be honest and these reflections can become empowering. They allow the Chamber to say goodbye to regret and remorse when our decisions are grounded and aligned with both our emotions and logic. We have the context and the ability to articulate our reasoning for our answers to strategic decisions.

ICCE in Ireland
ICCE Discovered & Explored Ireland
   
On October 20th, twenty-seven members of the Ankeny, Decorah and Urbandale Chamber traveled to Ireland. One of the first things we did was meet with the Limerick Chamber. We learned that with 600 members they are like all other Chambers. Membership (always working to increase), Economic Development, Government Relations and Marketing are some of their prime issues.

As we traveled the country visiting many of the historic places like the Cliffs of Moher, the Bunratty Castle and we were entertained with Seanchais (dressed in full medieval costume). The hospitality of the Chamber and citizens of Limerick was very warm and welcoming. 
 
It was a great trip for everyone and great friendships were made. Many of us are looking forward to the 2017 trip to Tuscany!

SBA Disaster Assistance Available to Iowa
Private Nonprofit Organizations

Low-interest federal disaster loans are now available to certain private nonprofit organizations in Iowa following President Obama's federal disaster declaration for Public Assistance as a result of severe storms and flooding that occurred Sept. 21 - Oct. 3, 2016, announced Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Private nonprofits that provide essential services of a governmental nature are eligible for assistance.
 
SBA disaster assistance is now available in Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Des Moines, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Howard, Linn, Mitchell, Winneshiek, and Wright counties.
