From the ICF-NJ President
Dear ICF-NJ Members,
I hope everyone is enjoying the transition from summer into fall. This is my favorite time of year. I look forward to the stillness that fall brings me.
One of the last hurrahs of this summer was attending Converge 2017, ICF's Global Conference. (Please read the article (
ßLINK) written by Past Presidents Tony Calabrese, Brooke Manino, and Lynn Schaber about their experience there.)
I've been an ICF member for more than 20 years and, during that time, attended eight Converge conferences and presented at two of them. Prior to every Converge, I prepare by pre-identifying sessions to attend, friends and colleagues with whom to have coffee or a meal, and making sure I visit the vendors.
While that seems like an overflow of information and activity, the reality is Converge allows me to "work from a place of rest" (as stated by fellow ICF-NJ Chapter member and Converge presenter Erica Loren). Although running from session-to-session and meal-to-meal, I'm able to settle down, be fully present, and work (on myself, my friendships, and my professional relationships) and renew (my energy, my passion, and my knowledge), so I can be a better coach for my clients.
If you were not able to attend, I do hope that you strongly consider attending in 2019. Come join your fellow coaches and "work from a place of rest" where you to can be in motion and in stillness at the same time.
☺
Namaste,
Renée Robertson
2017 ICF-NJ President

Reflections on Converge 2017
This month, we're delighted to share an article about ICF Global's conference by Past Presidents Tony Calabrese, Brooke Manino, and Lynn Schaber.
ICF Converge 2017 in Washington, DC, was our first global conference in five years. With more than 1,600 coaches in attendance, it was a bustling two and a half days.
The opening ceremony, with a roll call of all 60 countries represented, kicked off the event with enthusiasm and high energy. As Tony recalled, "It reminded me that I am a part of something a lot bigger than just myself and my one person practice."
Each year, the ICF Global Board Chair presents an individual or organization with the ICF Chair's Award in recognition of the work he or she is doing to advance ICF's mission and vision.
During the opening session, ICF Global Board Chair Hilary Oliver, PCC, presented the 2017 Chair's Award to all ICF Members, Credential-holders and Converge participants for working daily to advance the mission and vision of ICF.
The keynote speaker, Hal Gregersen, executive director of the MIT Leadership Center, shared his most recent research project findings. The key ones were about how leaders can find and ask the right questions to disrupt how we view and interact with the world.
As Gregerson said, "You don't know what it is that you don't know." We coaches must be open to asking as many questions as possible to learn what is really happening for our clients. For those who work with clients in the business world, it's important to realize the more responsibility and authority one has, the more likely one can be "isolated" from those who really know the details of what is going on.
The conference offered sessions for all attendees:
- Business Development, to help coaches grow their practices
- Coaching Practice, to strengthen our coaching skills
- The Science of Coaching, to explore the evidence-based practices that underpin coaching
- The Future of Coaching, to anticipate how changes in our world may impact the global coaching community
All of the sessions were interactive and engaging. After attending the session on "Harmony: How do we create it?" and experiencing Shin-Gi-Tai, Tony remarked, "I never thought four people could continually lift me out of a chair with their fingers under my armpits and the back of my knees. However, by doing things in Harmony, by having the entire mind, body and skill in balance, and working as a group of "We," as opposed to "I," anything is possible. I have the memories to prove it."
New Jersey was well represented with 40 coaches from our area attending, two of whom were presenters at the conference:
- Erica Loren, PCC, co-presented "Humor: It's No Joke! Workplace Needs to Laugh"
- Stephanie Licata, ACC, presented "Career Coaching: An Individual and Organizational Approach"
Congratulations to both on a job well done!
