Walking through crunchy leaves that have fallen from the trees, sipping warm apple cider with cinnamon, indulging in pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream and...celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Month...make fall my favorite time of the year.

This year, fall also brought the kick-off to our Great Minds Don't Think Alike Scholarship Fund, which was established to provide educational therapy, language therapy and/or reading remediation in a small group setting to students who would otherwise be unable to access these services. A scholarship fund has been a longtime dream of IDALA, and we are thrilled to see it come to fruition. We hope that with continued and growing support it can become a lifeline to literacy for those in need.

This year's Great Minds Don't Think Alike event was a huge success thanks to so many wonderful people! Board member, Wendy Schall and her husband Steve, graciously opened up their beautiful home to over 100 guests as we honored John Corcoran, Literacy Activist and Author. In his book "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read" John shares, "the words on the paper were the bullies of my childhood that never ceased taunting me well into my adulthood." John stood up to those 'bullies,' by eventually learning to read. He is on a lifelong campaign to ensure struggling readers receive the support they need. Thank you to our honorary host families, Helen Barlett and Tony Bill; Clare and Mitchell Davis; Pam and Chris Fillo; Penny and Travis Hansen; Desiree and Jeff Lapin; Julie and Brian Liebman; Lauren and Anton Schiff; and Richard Schulte and Josh Wayser for your generosity and support.

Keep an eye out for information about our membership luncheon and our Language and Learning 2015 Conference on May 2nd at UCLA, with keynote speaker Dr. Louisa Moats.

See you soon!

After the Diagnosis
Do's and Don'ts
by Lainie Donnell, MA, ET/P

Do #1: Talk about it!

Mysteries are just that... mysterious. Your child just went through hours of rigorous testing and may not have even understood why they were doing it. Now it is time to lift the veil and discuss what the practitioner found. Use age appropriate language..Click here to continue

IDA National Conference  Recap
by Jen Kalan, MA, ET/P

On Nov. 12, several board members attended IDA's Annual Reading Literacy and Learning Conference in San Diego.  Over the course of the few days, we were inspired, motivated, and educated about topics related to dyslexia, including multi-sensory interventions, working memory, writing interventions, reading comprehension strategies, emergent literacy, and many more.  While enjoying beautiful San Diego, we gained a deeper knowledge of learning disabilities, opportunities to network with like-minded professionals and parents, and came home with practical activities to use with our clients. These conferences always recharge the batteries and leave us feeling incredibly grateful that we have the opportunity to work with individuals with dyslexia and their families. Looking forward to another recharge in May at IDALA's conference at UCLA.
