HIGHLIGHTS FROM "INTRODUCE A GIRL to PHOTONICS” WEEK 2016
When shown what engineers can do, 76% of girls get interested in engineering. To inspire more young girls this year during the International Year of Light held 2-9 October 2016, the IEEE Photonics Society held an International “Introduce a Girl to Photonics” Week to support our Women in Photonics initiative and IEEE Day 2016.
In total, this outreach campaign and the IEEE Photonics Conference 2016 contributed 110+ events to the global campaign.
SHERYL SANDBERG'S LEAN INSEMINAR: MY EXPERIENCE
This past academic year (2015-2016) I had the privilege of serving as a board member on my Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department student organization, Systers: Women in EECS at the University of Tennessee.
As an organization we requested and got approval from our department head to have a one-hour credit seminar class, which met weekly this past spring semester for a book study on Sheryl Sandberg’s
Lean In: For Graduates. I had the amazing opportunity to lead the class and the enrolled participants took weekly quizzes on book chapters, engaged on an online forum and presented a final project that highlighted personal takeaways or gains as result of the course.
