Cook County State's Attorney's Race
Last week, we took a look at
recent fundraising numbers in the race for Cook County State's Attorney.
This week, we went a step further by categorizing all contributions from July 1, 2015 to present for each candidate. We also sorted each candidate's Individual Donors into seven subcategories. Our methodology is explained below.
Anita Alvarez and Kim Foxx appear to show similar fundraising patterns so far, with around 50% of donations coming from individual donors.
Upon further examination, we found that nearly $24,000 (or 7%) of Alvarez's Individual Donations came from employees in the Cook County State's Attorney's office, and 36% of her Individual Donations came from local legal professionals. This contrasts with Foxx's 21% support from individual donors in the legal profession.
Foxx received 13% of her overall funds so far from other Political Committees, while Alvarez and candidate Donna More have received only 1% each from this source.
Alvarez and Foxx have received 23% of their overall contributions from union sources, and Donna More has received no union money so far in the race.
In 2008, Alvarez financed the early part of her primary campaign with a $600,000 loan from her husband, James Gomez. So far in the 2016 race, neither Alvarez nor Foxx have relied on loans from themselves or their family members. Conversely,
Donna More has loaned her campaign $250,000, or 54% of her overall funds, and Christopher Pfannkuche has loaned himself 100% of his current balance of $28,000.

Methodology
Using data from Illinois Sunshine and the Illinois State Board of Elections, we classified all donations in the State's Attorney's race from July 1, 2015 to present using six categories: Business, Individual Donors, Law Firms, Loans, Political, and Union. The "Business" category includes businesses across many sectors, and the "Political" category includes only registered political committees.
After sorting all contributions, we parsed the "Individual Donors" into six categories, determined by donors' self-reported occupations: Business, Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Education, Government, Attorneys, Nonprofit, and Miscellaneous/Unreported. Donors who did not report their professions or reported that they were "retired" were included in the final category. Further details are available upon request.
