State Super PACs Spent $15.5 Million
in the Illinois Primary
The March 15th Primary Election in Illinois brought a new political landscape, with state-level Super PACs exerting their influence like never before. Since their creation in 2010, the popularity of these organizations has grown exponentially. In 2012, only
$593 in spending by these groups was reported. That number shot up in 2014, with
$6.8 Million reported.
In this year's Primary Election, quarterly reports show that top Super PACs spent over $15.5 Million to elect local candidates.
Liberty Principles PAC tops the spending list with $5.1 Million, nearly all spent on Independent Expenditures (IEs). Illinois GO came in second with $2.8 Million, mostly spent on Representative Ken Dunkin's unsuccessful re-election bid. Turnaround Illinois reported the third highest spending this quarter, but didn't actually spend any money on IEs.
Instead, they transferred $2.3 Million on Liberty Principles PAC, who turned around and spent that money against many candidates across the state. The money from Turnaround Illinois makes up the vast majority of Liberty Principles PAC's income for this quarter.
It should be noted that the Illinois Republican Party and the Democratic Majority (Leadership Committee for House Democrats) were the only Political Party Committees to make Independent Expenditures this quarter.
The Republican party reported $895,643
on this type of spending, and the Democratic Majority reported
$58,815.
