Director
Freida Lee Mock's Academy Award-winning documentary film
relives the public controversial origins of the renowned Vietnam
Veterans Memorial and showcases the first decade of work of its
young creator, 21-year-old Yale architecture student Maya
Lin. Beating out some of the most prestigious architecture
firms from around the world, Lin's proposal was selected from over
1,000 different designs, a giant victory for such a young and
unknown artist. Today, Lin is
a celebrated and successful architect, activist, and
environmentalist, and is still creating inspirational places of
reverence, utility, and retrospection.
Though
a prestigious and beloved U.S. monument, the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial and its simplistic design still elicits conflicting
emotion from service men and women as well as civilians. Do our
memorials and monuments truly represent the most fitting tribute to
our heroes and other beloved icons? This film holds particular
relevance in light of the current controversy around Ground Zero
and plans for our 9/11 memorial.
