Good news from Down Under: The latest 1/18 scale Formula 5000 release from Classic Carlectables arrived this week. It is the Matich A50 in 1971 Australian Grand Prix trim. The 1971 AGP held at Warwick Farms was the first race for the Matich A50. Powered by a Repco-Holden engine and piloted by Frank Matich, the A50 was unbeatable.

The afternoon race practice session was dominated by Matich, putting the A50 on pole by over 1 second. The race was no different with Matich leading from flag to flag, in the process setting the fastest lap. Produced in an Edition of just 1,000 pieces, US availability is very limited. $249.95 plus shipping Order HERE.

We're hoping to see at least one US Formula 5000 competitor from Classic Carlectables in 2014 - 2015. Stay tuned. We'll pass along the info as soon as we get it.

Here are a few new books that we expect to arrive in the next few days:

The Cars of Vel Miletich and Parnelli Jones
by Jim Dilamarter & Ren Wicks

Photography by Dean Kirkland

Vel Miletich, Parnelli Jones, and their Vel's Parnelli Jones (VPJ) Racing team of drivers, engineers, designers, fabricators and mechanics dominated the American automobile racing scene of the 1970s from Jones's humble early career, to the pinnacle of motorsports: back to-back Indianapolis 500 race wins and three consecutive United States Auto Club National Championships.

Best known as the winning entrant at Indianapolis with Al Unser and the Johnny Lightning Specials in 1970 and 1971, the Vel Miletich/Parnelli Jones team eventually encompassed several different disciplines of motorsport. In addition to running what was then the USAC National Championship circuit, they were also fielding cars in USAC Silver Crown dirt track events, Formula 5000 events on road courses, NHRA drag racing, off-road racing and even Formula One.

When the opportunity arose in 2012 for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation to acquire many of the cars from the beautifully preserved Vel/Parnelli collection, the Foundation board members had no hesitation with making that acquisition. Although these cars are ideally viewed in person at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, the pages of this book will certainly whet one's appetite for this most amazing collection.

Inside Shelby American:

Wrenching and Racing With Carroll Shelby in the 1960s

By John Morton

In the late 1950s, a young John Morton was transfixed with sports car racing. His dreams of competition eventually led him to enroll, in 1962, in the Shelby School of High Performance Driving. In a bold moment after the last class, Morton asked Carroll Shelby if he might come to work for the newly formed Shelby American. The answer was "Yes, here's a broom." Thus ended Morton's college career and began his long racing career.

Over the next three years, Morton would be a firsthand witness to the evolution of one of the most iconic sports car builders and racing teams of the 1960s. Inside Shelby American is his personal account of a company overflowing with talent, from designer Pete Brock to fabricator extraordinare Phil Remington to drivers like Dan Gurney, Ken Miles, Bob Bondurant, and Phil Hill. The cars were equally captivating: AC Cobra, Mustang GT350, Ford GT, Daytona Coupe. In this book, Morton's story is intertwined with the memories of other Shelby staffers of the period, revealing through historic photography and an untold perspective the rousing story of America's most legendary racer and car builder.
