December 2017
The Institute for Public Health Innovation Releases the State of Maryland's First Food Charter 
In October 2017, IPHI released the " Maryland Food Charter: A Roadmap to a Healthy and Sustainable Food System."   The document contains recommendations for each of the five major food system sectors: production and processing, distribution, access, consumption, and recovery. The Maryland Food Charter was the result of a 3-year undertaking that began in 2014 and engaged food policy stakeholders, including state legislators, across the state of Maryland. 
The HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign Engages 60 Maryland and Virginia Municipalities

This past year, seven new cities and towns joined the Campaign by passing a HEAL resolution. Sixteen existing HEAL Campaign members received recognition for notable advancements in policy implementation. IPHI has worked on the HEAL Campaign since 2012, offering content expertise to aid cities and towns throughout the Mid-Atlantic to create healthier communities. 

Healthy Montgomery
Transforming
Communities Initiative Focuses on Policy and Systems Change to Prevent Obesity and Tobacco Use

In 2017 through the Health Montgomery Transforming Communities Initiative, IPHI awarded grants to several collaborative efforts to increase access to healthy, affordable food and prevent tobacco use in Montgomery County, Maryland, and launched a partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools to support the development of Local School Wellness Councils.

The Health Collaborative Released Dan River Region Health Equity Report and Held 3rd Annual Summit 

Providing staff support for The Health Collaborative, IPHI has worked in partnership with numerous community stakeholders to conduct the Dan River Region's first community health needs assessment. The Health Collaborative also released the region's first Health Equity Report, which was followed by the 3rd Annual Health Summit, which drew over 100 participants. 

I PHI Partners with VCU to Study Community-Based Interventions for Pediatric Asthma 


IPHI is partnering with Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Psychology to implement RVA Breathes, a 6-year NIH-funded research grant to assess the impact of evidence-based interventi ons on asthmatic children in Richmond, VA. I PHI will oversee the community health worker (CHW) intervention in which CHWs will conduct home visits to provide education on home environment triggers and techniques to reduce them. 
IPHI & HQI Partner on Richmond Accountable Health Community 

Health Quality Innovators (HQI), in partnership with IPHI, has been awarded a five-year, $4.5 million grant by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to address some of the upstream factors that contribute to poor health. The funds will support the creation of an Accountable Health Community, in which health care providers will annually screen more than 75,000 patients with Medicare or Medicaid for unmet basic needs, and will connect them to local agencies and organizations that can help.

Regional Policy Work on CHW Workforce Development and Certification 
 
During 2017, IPHI led and guided several policy-related activities in DC, Maryland, and Virginia to build the community health worker profession. IPHI held an Advocacy Day in Richmond, hosted CHW forums in VA and DC, and provided support to the Maryland CHW forum. IPHI also continues to partner with key stakeholders across the region to advocate for policies, structural change and resources that would support the CHW profession. Learn more  .
