Meet your Board- 1st Vice President~ Sarah Crail
Hi IPPG friends! Here's a little about me...I grew up in West Lafayette and then went off to college out of state. I am a second career photographer. My first love was always art, but my parents encouraged me to pursue a "marketable degree" so I went into secondary English Ed with TESL as my undergrad and Counseling as my master's. I served as a missionary teacher in Puerto Rico for 10 years before my husband and I met online. I came back to IN in 2010, and Roger and I were married that December. Because I was never licensed to teach in IN, and Roger's work schedule is such that we would never see each other if I were working a traditional job, I decided not to pursue my teaching license here, but work part time at JCPenny portrait studio. After a year, I left to pursue my own business. All of my photography education has been with IPPG, PPA, other affiliates, some online courses, and working alongside others. I spent the first couple of years trying to figure out what I was doing and had no intention of pursuing weddings. However, after assisting on a few weddings with Joe DeFabis and a couple of other photographers, I found that to be one of my true passions. I continue to work with portraits and weddings and am working to grow both my technical skills and my business, and I am happy to serve the Guild as first vice president this year. In my "spare time" I enjoy working on personal projects and would like to invite you all to attend the gallery opening of my next show THIS MONDAY Jan 8th from 5-7:30 at the Danville IN public library. The theme is "Historic Barns of Hendricks County."
Afterwards, all photography friends are welcome to my home studio to see my space, shoot a little, and visit as long as you like. Here's a link to rsvp  https://www.facebook.com/events/362630710875673/

I was born and raised in Indianapolis and still reside in the suburban outskirts of my hometown. Monday through Friday I am a commercial insurance underwriter. My husband and I have successfully (and sometimes miraculously) raised a son and daughter to be contributing members of society.  I am an avid reader, a nature lover, a life-long learner and a perpetual daydreamer.

My journey into photography is rooted in the Indiana State Fair. As Hoosier tradition dictates, our family made the annual pilgrimage to stuff ourselves with fried foods and tour barns full of livestock we city kids considered exotic. It was at the photography exhibit at the fair that I really started to fall in love with the art. I swore one day I would buy a camera and one of my photos would hang on those walls. Fast forward many years to my daughter’s senior year in high school - she took a film photography class, and I was finally motivated to buy my first DSLR and give photography a try myself. I decided the best way to learn how to use it was to do a year-long project where I took and posted a photo every single day for a year. That was a year of transformation for me and I could literally write a book (ok, maybe just a pamphlet) on the many ways my life was changed by that year, but if you’re a photographer, you may already know.

My favorite types of photography are nature, abstract, macro and still life. I started making still life photos as a means of taking photos in between traveling or hiking plus it’s a relaxing escape from reality. I didn’t really think of myself as a still life photographer until I decided to enter a couple of my photos into the fair, and they did well. Photography is a journey with no end for me, and I enjoy that it challenges me to keep growing and learning new skills. This year I hope try my hand at some portraiture and finally master using flash.
