WORLD OBESITY DAY 2017

Untreated, obesity is responsible for a significant proportion of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and many types of cancer.  If we don't tackle obesity the medical bill for treating the diseases that follow directly from obesity is expected to reach US$1.2 trillion per year by 2025.

Investing in the prevention, management and treatment of obesity is a cost-effective action for governments and health services. Investment can help achieve the 2025 targets set by the World Health Organization to halt the rise in obesity and to achieve a  25% relative reduction in mortality from NCDs.
ISE is an advocate of World Obesity's Action Initiative campaign, a coalition of stakeholders joined in the fight to overcome obesity through an ever more powerful collective voice. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to raise awareness  of the obesity epidemic and how it can be tackled and your society can help! Visit the Global Activity Map for this years World Obesity Day taking place on 11th October 2017 to see what is taking place near you or add your own activities to the map.

ISE also advocates World Obesity's Health Venues Award, aimed at getting conference venues to provide healthier catering and to promote physical activity at the meetings held on their site. Click here for more details and for steps on how to ensure your own meetings are healthier.
