Starting Salaries Up for New Veterinarians, Along with Debt
This summer the AVMA released the 2017 AVMA & Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges Report on the Market for Veterinary Education. The report indicated that starting salaries for new veterinary graduates are increasing, but so is the educational debt acquired to obtain their degrees.

According to the report:
  • The weighted, mean starting salary for 2016 graduates finding full-time employment prior to graduation was $73,380, up from $70,117 in 2015. Those pursuing internships had mean annual earnings of $30,829.
  • The real weighted mean debt of all U.S. respondents reporting debt for the 2016 graduating class was $143,758, an increase from $141,354 in 2015.
  The Journal of the AVMA reported a summary of the report or the entire 2017 AVMA & AAVMC Report on Veterinary Markets is available for free download by AVMA members.

Free Financial Tool to Help Veterinary Clinics Now Available
financial_accounting.jpg In an effort to improve benchmarking throughout the veterinary profession, American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has collaborated with Veterinary Management Groups (VMG) to provide a free online version of its popular financial management resource, Chart of Accounts.

The AAHA/VMG Chart of Accounts is a valuable tool that will allow practitioners to better organize practice finances in line with generally accepted accounting principles.

For more information and to view the AAHA/VMG Chart of Accounts visit  www.AAHA.org.

Help Support Young Veterinary Careers
For the fourth consecutive year, Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) is offering Future Service Scholarships to support future cattle veterinarians graduating from the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Veterinary Medicine.

BI formed an alliance with the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Foundation to offer this unique scholarship to graduating seniors at ISU. The final amount of the scholarship is determined by BI veterinarian and producer customers submitting box tops from Pyramid® 5 and Pyramid® 5 + Presponse® SQ product boxes.

BI will donate the following to fund the Future Service Scholarships. The donation is doubled for producers and veterinarians who participate in the Iowa Green and Gold Tag Preconditioning Program .

* $2.50 per 100 doses of PYRAMID 5 + PRESPONSE SQ
* $1.25 per 100 doses of PYRAMID 5

From now through Dec. 31, 2017, producers and veterinarians throughout Iowa are encouraged to help fund the scholarship by clipping their box tops. Producers should forward their box tops to their veterinary clinics. Clinics then work with their BI sales representatives to submit to:

Preventive Healthcare Certificate Program
Do you have an associate veterinarian who is a recent graduate?
Did you hire a new team member?
Does your staff need a refresher course in the importance (and necessity) of preventive healthcare to your practice and patients?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, then we encourage you to check out the Partners for Healthy Pets Preventive Healthcare Certificate Program. It is a free, ten-module certificate program designed for healthcare team members, veterinarians and veterinary students. The modules explore the tools and resources that are available to communicate the benefit of preventive healthcare to your clients.

The learning modules include:
  • Implementing Preventive Healthcare Guidelines in Your Practice
  • Monthly Preventive Healthcare Payment Plans
  • Internet Marketing and Social Media
  • The ABC's of Successful Communication Skills (verbal and non-verbal)
  • The 360° View of Becoming a Feline-Friendly Practice
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is the adage from Benjamin Franklin and it is as true today as it was over a hundred years ago. Using this self-paced course, you and your team can sharpen your skills and gain new knowledge on how to provide the highest quality of preventive healthcare in conjunction with yearly checkups.

National Check the Chip Day - August 15
Microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen...but a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

To remind pet owners to have their pets microchipped and to keep the registration information up-to-date, AVMA and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) joined together to create "Check the Chip Day."

Visit the Check the Chip Day Toolkit
for AVMA Member Veterinarians with lots of ideas and resources to help your clinic promote "Check the Chip Day" in your community. Including:
  • Stress-free ways to observe the day.
  • Social Media Posts and Images
  • Newsletter Article and a Sample Press Release
  The IVMA Communiqué is published bi-monthly by the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association.
