Our Savior's This Week

Dear Church,

There is a Jewish idiom, perhaps borne out of the Holocaust, which says this:

We cannot laugh as long as just one brother is weeping.

Isn't that where compassion comes from? Isn't that the root of empathy?  That if there is a need, or a tragedy, or hurt, or a heartbreak, we must not act as if the whole world is a party.  In a challenging book entitled The Hole in the Gospel, Richard Stearns writes "Why don't we respond to other people's kids like they are our kids? Why don't we help starving people in Africa like we would if they were literally left on our doorstep?"  I suppose the answer is, because we can't feed them all.  Agreed.  But today, I'd like to ask us to consider some.  Not all.  Some.

  • Millions struggle today because of a storm called "Sandy"
  • Our Anuak friend, Pastor Gilo, heard that his young daughter was beaten by a gang in Ethiopia
  • Kalley and Marah Sobczak are still confined to wheelchairs following a Labor Day accident
  • Someone, somewhere, is losing a job today

Can you speak a prayer for them? Can you share a smile with them? Can you at least think of them with compassion and caring?  Because tomorrow they may be our children.

See you in Church,

Pastor Steve
