If You Build It, They Will Come

"Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established."
Proverbs 16:3 (ESV)

The Presbytery of S. California's "Team Praha" in the Czech Republic in 2013

Remember how in the 1989 blockbuster movie Field of Dreams the main character (Kevin Costner) heard a voice whispering, "If you build it, they will come," and deduced that he was supposed to cut down his cornfields and build a baseball diamond so that great baseball players from the past could come back and play? Of course, his wife was very dubious about this idea - understandably so!

Every venture has its own share of uncertainty of success. When a church or presbytery considers planning a short-term missions venture, there are so many doubts and questions. "Is there really interest? Is there value in even doing it? Aren't there so many things that can go wrong? Is it worth the cost and effort? Who will lead it? What if we create this opportunity, but no one comes?" The fact is, it is impossible to predict success, such that sometimes we simply need to move forward in faith - to go ahead and "build it,"and then hope that "they will come."

Thankfully, the odds of success of a short-term missions venture far exceed the probability of baseball players rising from the dead to play in a new baseball diamond! Let me say that, while I cannot promise you success, I can tell you that few who have participated in short-term missions have been disappointed, and many churches have been encouraged by the value that it brings to their congregation. I truly want to believe that, "If you build it, they will come." But I am convinced that most likely, "If they come, they won't be disappointed!"

So, if your church or presbytery has been thinking about adding short-term missions to the work that you do, please visit the OPC STM website at www.opcstm.org to learn more about short-term missions, and call me to help you!  I encourage you to strongly consider "building it" in 2014. And may God bless your efforts with success.
