Illegal Airbnb Crack Down
60th Air & Water Show
43rd Ward Shredding Event
Dear Neighbors,

This week the City of Chicago sent out violation notices to almost 2,500 AirBnB operators warning they must remove their listing within 7 days or face heavy fines. You can read the Chicago Tribune story here.

While this action is welcome, it has been more than 2 years since AirBnB regulations were passed under an ordinance that I believe falls short of adequately protecting residents rights in our Ward. Tahe City's reveals a flaw in Airbnb's system - units can be listed on its site without a proper street address. This poses a potential safety as well as a regulatory issue. Airbnb should fix this issue and not burden the City or its hosts with this compliance issue. Read more here.

Currently, there are 6,000 legal short term rentals in Chicago but, overall, the number of AirBnB's have grown almost 100% every year since 2009. This, coupled with our 2% vacancy rate in the 43rd Ward, means we will remain vigilant in efforts to curtail the proliferation of unlicensed short term rentals that have been devastating to the neighborhood character of other destination cities around the world.
