Your Immune System: Make it Strong and Responsive!

Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by countless bacteria, viruses, fungi, allergens and toxins. Our human organisms present a buffet for these little guys to feast at, offering nearly limitless resources that they can use for energy and reproduction. Luckily for us, getting into the human body is not an easy task. And if they do manage to get in, they have to deal with a variety of white blood cell and antibody attempts to detoxify them.

From an invading organism perspective, a human is a bit like a medieval fortress, with a moat, outer walls, inner walls, archers on the parapets and a standing army waiting to neutralize any invader that makes it through the outer defenses. With this kind of protection, how do we ever get sick in the first place?  The answer is not always apparent.  For most of us, we become vulnerable when we compromise our immune systems with questionable lifestyle choices.

We'll read in this newsletter various ways the immune system works, and suggestions on how we may keep it optimized.  Dr. Connie muses on the energetics of immunity and offers a naturopathic approach to system vibrancy.  Dr. Marcel writes on nutrients that strengthen the immune system and the best way to get them into your system.  Dr. Corrine gives us an insight into the bane of the immune system -- sugar. Jane Hernandez speaks of the mental/emotional paths to befriending our immune systems and Nicole Noceto offers thoughts on maintaining balance in how we live our lives helps us stay healthy.

Finally,  we have been hinting for months about a major new direction we will be taking in our offerings at Pacific Naturopathic.  What is it? Well, we won't spill the beans yet.  Suffice it to say that we feel like we have been guided in this direction for many years and finally all the details have fallen into place. Stay tuned.

Be Well!

Musings on the Immune System

* * *

Immunity is defined as resistance to disease. It is how we protect ourselves from adverse external influences, whether they be food allergens or micro organisms. When the system goes awry in autoimmunity, our bodies fight internal wars in which our immune systems become confused and we attack ourselves from within.

A key player in autoimmunity is the thymus gland. The thymus gland processes a type of white blood cells known as T lymphocytes. The job of the T cell is to help cells recognize and prepare defenses against foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses and allergens. It is their job to discriminate what is 'self' and what is 'non self.'

The thymus gland is associated with the heart chakra. A fundamental lesson of the heart chakra is to free ourselves from the divisive discrimination of self and not self that prevents the expression of universal love. Universal love involves both the sense of being a part of the whole that love for others brings, and the sense of love for oneself.

If we accept the idea that all ailments are multifactorial, we might entertain the idea that, on an energetic level, working with self acceptance and with love for others could be a key component in a comprehensive holistic treatment plan for autoimmune conditions.

There are many stories told of both enlightened beings and ordinary persons who have been unharmed by wild animals when they have been able, in extraordinary circumstances, to drop the fear of the beasts and to acknowledge their oneness with them.  Could there be an analogy here?

How exactly might one proceed to turn from a fear based reality to a reality in which we are one with all that is? How might a person who does not love themselves move into a loving space? Mentally working through issues helps us understand, but doesn't necessarily transform our experience.

One answer can be found in energy medicine. Energy medicine has the capability of shifting maladaptive behavior and thought patterns. Through homeopathy, flower essences and color and light therapies, and through attunement with beings of higher energy and the practice of techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique, we are able to transcend energy patterns that may have been beneficial at the time that they were established, but that no longer serve us.

Along these lines, it was emphasized at a major cancer conference I recently attended, that in order to heal (from cancer) it is necessary to align ourselves with people of a higher energy vibration than our own.

I offer this, not as a solution to immune system issues, but as food for thought as we work through aspects of immune system functioning that are normally not addressed.  See below for many other perspectives on the immune system.

Nutrients and the Immune System

 * * *

                  Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

Many patients come to see us in our clinic hefting shopping bags full of supplements that they are taking.

Let's look at the word "supplement."  The number one Goggle definition is "something that completes or enhances something else when added to it."  Obviously, popping mega doses of supplements is not a substitute for making lifestyle choices that support, build and maintain the immune system.  Rather, supplements "complete or enhance" your good habits.  We know the basics of good habits:  manage stress, maintain an upward focus, strive toward varied and healthy relationships, stay positive, laugh often, follow the basic rules of good nutrition and move your body regularly so your pulse rate pushes 120 beats per minute.

By far the best way to fill the nutritional needs that empower your immune system is through your diet.  But in cases where absorption is compromised or a clear deficiency exists, "supplementing" your diet can tilt the protective balance in your favor a bit.  Let's look at some of the more common vitamins and minerals and they part they play in immune system maintenance.

Selenium. Selenium stimulates the development and function of all types of white blood cells and enhances their ability to respond to bacterial and viral invaders. Selenium also works synergistically as an antioxidant with Vitamin E, A and C.  Brazil nuts are exceptionally high in selenium. Fish and shellfish, especially tuna, shrimp and sardines are also very good sources.

Vitamin A.  Nicknamed "the anti-infective" vitamin.  Vitamin A plays a role in infection by maintaining the immunological integrity of mucosal surfaces. Vitamin A deficiency is associated with impaired immunity and increased risk of infectious disease.  Sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, kale and other dark green leafy veggies are all contain high amounts of Vitamin A.

Vitamin B2. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) enhances the immune system by reinforcing the body's reserve of antibodies, which guard against infection.  Soybeans, spinach, tempeh, yogurt, mushrooms eggs and asparagus are excellent food sources.

Vitamin B6. Several studies have suggested that a vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) deficiency can depress the white blood cells' ability to mature into specific immunological cells. Supplementing with moderate doses to address the deficiency restores immune function, but megadoses don't produce additional benefits. Some animal studies have also shown a link between vitamin B6 deficiency and decreased antibody production.  Vitamin B6 is high in tuna, turkey, beef, chicken and salmon.  Vegetarian sources include sweet potatoes, sunflower seeds, spinach and bananas.

Vitamin C. Vitamin C has been long recognized as an important nutrient for the immune system and is used intravenously in our clinic to boost immune function in severe chronic illnesses like cancer. Vitamin C is vital in the production of white blood cells that defend the body against both infection and toxins. Vitamin C also plays a role in generating a protein called interferon, which is released from cells in response to the presence of viruses or bacteria.  Good sources of vitamin C include papayas, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, strawberries, oranges and kiwi fruit.

Vitamin D. Vitamin D, which is produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight, signals an antimicrobial response to certain bacteria.  Vitamin D could rightly be described as a "miracle nutrient" for your immune system, as it enables your body to produce well over 200 antimicrobial peptides (amino acid compounds), which are indispensable in fighting off a wide range of infections.  Salmon, sardines, tuna, eggs and mushrooms all contain Vitamin D.

Vitamin E. Vitamin E is another important nutrient that stimulates the production of B-cells, a type of white blood cell that destroys bacteria in the body. Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, spinach, spinach, chard, avocados, asparagus and whole grains.

Zinc. Zinc is a trace element essential for cells of the immune system. Zinc deficiency affects the ability of T cells and other immune cells to function as they should. Caution: While it's important to have sufficient zinc in your diet (15-25 mg per day), too much zinc can actually inhibit the function of the immune system.  Beef, lamb, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, lentils, garbanzo beans, cashews and quinoa contain excellent amounts of zinc.

Yes, there are other nutrients and herbs not covered above that support the immune system, but these are the main players.  Make conscious food choices and eat slowly and only when relaxed and your immune system will be happy.

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.

* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.

* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.

* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.

* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.

* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.

To name a few:

            IV Glutathione

            IV Alpha Lipoic Acid

            IV Vit C

            Amino Acid infusions

Working With the Immune System: The Naturopathic Way

* * *

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

When a patient complains of a poorly functioning immune system, they are most often speaking of an underactive immune system. They will generally provide a history of having been ill again and again, and of having recovered slowly or incompletely. Or they may provide a history of having been horribly ill, with a high fever and a multitude of symptoms.

Our perspective, as naturopathic doctors, is admittedly not conventional. In the first place, we always consider that there are two major factors at work in illness.  The first is the virulence of the organism, and the second is the receptivity of the host. A dramatic response to a virulent organism is actually reflective of a very good immune system.  Fever fights microbes. Little children may spike a very high fever in response to a bug, and be just fine two days later, while the mom (who didn't have the resources to spike a fever) may be ill for days. The child in this case has the better immune system.

When children, or adults, are ill again and again, we consider underlying causes. Suboptimal thyroid function or low vitamin D, or a deficiency of iron, B12 or folic acid specifically predispose towards illness. Other missing nutrients, such as zinc and selenium also play a part. We may therefore test with conventional laboratory testing, or with intracellular nutrient testing to find what the immune system may be lacking. In the face of maldigestion or malabsorption, we may recommend I.V. nutrients to deliver needed nutrients directly to the cell.

Bad lifestyle habits compound the problem. Sugar, for example, depresses the white blood cell count. After Easter or Halloween, children are not ill because the air is filled with more bugs at that time, but rather because their white count has no way to recover as they bombard it hour after hour with sugary junk foods.

Dr. Marcel and I worked for a time at an insurance company which developed a wellness based phone line for clients. During the annual flu shot campaign, we refused the flu shots and gathered a group of employees interested in supporting their immune systems, rather than taking the flu shots. Our follow up statistics showed that our group had far fewer sick days, and fewer cases of the flu.  It is always better to prevent a problem before it occurs than to wait until you have to overcome it.

If you do need to overcome an illness, there are many tools available to support the immune system. We use thymic protein to support the function of the thymus gland, other nutrients and botanicals to increase Natural Killer Cell function, I.V. Vitamin C as an antiviral, hot and cold contrast therapies to bring immune response to the area of the body affected by disease, and energy medicine to balance underlying energetic issues.

When the concern is an overactive immune system, there are a multitude of other factors to consider. The over-reactivity of the immune system may result in autoimmunity. Autoimmunity often occurs at a time of major stress or major transition in a person's life. High cortisol, major hormonal change, use of antibiotics, and gastrointestinal illnesses all disrupt the lining of the gut. As the gut lining becomes permeable, larger particles of food pass through than should pass through. The immune system recognizes these particles as not self, starts defending against these particles, and the person develops food sensitivities. Cross reactivity occurs, and the body starts fighting itself.

All of the above need to be considered in treating the autoimmune process. In addition, we address the aberrant cell signaling mechanisms that are telling the immune system to attack what it shouldn't attack.  For us, as naturopaths, autoimmune thyroid disease is not simply a thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease is not simply a digestive disorder, and rheumatoid arthritis is not simply a joint disorder. These conditions are autoimmune conditions, and must be addressed both in terms of autoimmunity and in terms of the body system which has been affected.

So many other things play into immune system function.... from environmental influences to social influences, from laughter to love to purpose. We attempt, as naturopaths, to uncover and work with the dominant influences on the immune functioning of each individual patient.

Sugar and the Immune System:
Not A Healthy Relationship

Over the years, I have become more aware of my body and how it feels with different foods, with exercise, with rest and with stress.

One of the things I often notice is the shifts in how I feel after consuming large amounts of sugar. I often feel extremely tired about half an hour to an hour after a high carbohydrate load. I experience flare-ups of other symptoms I may be having at that point in time. If I am having joint pain, the joint pain increases after eating sugar. If I am already feeling rundown, I get sick more easily.

How does sugar cause all these changes in my body?

We all know about the sugar rush we get when we consume sugar, and the crash that soon follows. But what of the symptom flare-ups and the tendency to get sick more easily? These point to the effects of sugar on the immune system. Excess sugar increases inflammation and depresses immunity. The increase in inflammation in the body can lead to aches and pains in muscles and joints.

Studies have shown that downing 75 to 100 grams of a sugar solution (about 20 teaspoons of sugar, or the amount that is contained in two average 12-ounce sodas) causes a 50% drop in the ability of white blood cells to engulf bacteria and fight against them. This can start happening as quickly as half an hour post-ingestion. The immune suppression peaks at 2 hours, but the effect can last up to 5 hours after a sugar binge.

As stress also suppresses immunity, if I am under stress or not sleeping well and not restoring my body, the sugar in my diet is added ammo for my body to weaken. So how much sugar should we be limiting ourselves to in a day?

The answer is that we should eat as little sugar as possible. The American Heart Association guidelines are far more liberal, allowing up to 9 teaspoons  (150 calories or 37.5 grams) of sugar for men and 6 (100 calories or 25 grams) for women. These guidelines may offer a clue as to why diabetes and heart disease are such a problem in our culture. Note that one soda has over 40 grams of sugar!!!

To maintain a healthy immune system and optimal health, it is best to limit not just sugar in the form of baked goods, candies, and other obvious sweets, but also soft drinks, fruit juices, dried fruits and processed foods in general.

Balance: The Key to Optimal Health

* * *

"Only the subjective process of learning to listen and balance can guide us to self-healing. When we understand and do not resist, our bodies want to move toward balance." ~Ganga White

Nicole Noceto

I have come to realize the true magnitude of this concept of balance; a theme that is constantly present.  Considering a grander scheme, balance is referred to as homeostasis by Western scientists; in ancient Chinese philosophy, balance takes center stage with the concept of yin and yang.  Also, the Doshas as referred to in Ayurveda, which associate the balance of three elements (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) with optimal health.  From a medical standpoint, an energetic standpoint, or
however one might think of 'balance,' it is clearly intertwined with the essence of our existence.

Whether we give conscious thought to it, or not, life is an ongoing series of delicate balancing acts that ultimately contribute to our overall well-being.  Homeostasis, for example, is the self-regulating process by which stability is maintained under changing conditions.  It's a highly sophisticated and intuitive process.  We can think of this in terms of internal physiological factors (i.e. pH, body temperature, hormone levels), or perhaps in terms of lifestyle choices (a nourishing, well balanced meal; strength-building exercise/stretching, high-stress jobs/relaxing downtime, etc...).  When we think about the consequences of disrupting balance in any sense, there becomes an opportunity for sickness, disease, unhappiness, or exhaustion to occur.

Subsequently, maintaining balance (internal and external) becomes critical to our health.  How many of you have been so overworked, or so overly stressed, that as soon as the stress subsides, you get sick?  This perfectly demonstrates how leading an unbalanced life might undermine our health, particularly, our immune systems.  I am not talking about occasional, manageable stress (which can actually be good for us!), but chronic, unresolved stress.  Unfortunately, this type of chronic stress is an epidemic in today's culture, especially here in the Silicon Valley.

The many effects of perpetual stress directly disrupt our innate homeostatic physiology, from depleting the adrenal glands of cortisol, to over-stimulating the sympathetic nervous system.  Indirectly, then, chronic stress leads to an unbalanced lifestyle where we don't have time to cook for ourselves, meditate, or take a walk in Nature.  Clearly, the connections can be made as to why so many people are affected by Western diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome; insomnia; depression; heart disease - take your pick.

Modern society lacks an appropriate balance in its perspective of priorities; emphasizing the importance of long, stressful workdays (meaning productivity), and wildly undermining the importance of relaxation and self-care (viewed as laziness).  What each of us really needs is the balance: Enough 'good' stress to motivate us into being functional citizens who contribute to our communities, balanced out by the ability to back off and nurture ourselves!

Giving conscious thought to creating balance in our lives is a tremendous healing opportunity.

  BFF With Your Immune System

Healing Happens to a human being.
Curing happens to the body.

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

Jane 2013

What a concept: being best friends forever with your immune system. We live in a time when, increasingly, people are suffering from immune system related conditions which are not communicable and appear to lack any specific microbial cause. Doctors have understood for years that chronic stress in our lives can trigger a wide variety of immune system disorders, including allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, multiple sclerosis, lupus, type one diabetes, and many other conditions.

Though these conditions are very different, they have one thing in common: all are the result of mistaken identity by the immune system. Simply put, it attacks the wrong enemy. Instead of only attacking the dangerous microorganisms that actually endanger our lives, the white blood cells and chemical barriers of the immune system engage in battle with harmless pollens or food proteins, or on the very cells of our bodies. You may have noted that this list of conditions is increasing in western countries and it's quite common now for many of us to suffer from one or more of these conditions.

So, what can we do to help ourselves?

Researchers from various universities have determined that hypnotherapy and EFT can help prevent the immune system from weakening due to stress. They show that negative emotions, inner conflicts and limiting beliefs play a significant role in the development of stress-related illnesses.  And there are other studies which demonstrate that positive thinking, a self-empowered attitude and optimistic beliefs stimulate and enhance the healing process.

So why not start to develop a deeper relationship with your immune system? Why not remove negative blocks and achieve profound change, healing and self-empowerment? This is where working with the subconscious mind becomes so important.

For people who worry a lot, are anxious, or are easily distracted, hypnosis and EFT help them calm down and get to the root of their distress so that their immune system is not stressed and weakened. When hypnosis is induced in a person, relaxation techniques are used. Hypnosis acts to increase positive thinking through suggestion while using relaxation techniques to decrease stress. EFT (Tapping) releases high stress reactions within minutes of tapping so that you can get to the core issues that are causing the negative feelings and reactions.

Maybe it's time to deal more effectively with the stresses in your life in order to eliminate these processes and the symptoms that result from them. Please feel free to call me and I can explain more about how you can be helped.

Ginger Soup:
An Immune System Booster

* * *

Ginger, garlic, and onion are wonderful immune boosters, and anti-viral, as well. Turmeric is anti inflammatory and anti-cancer. Cayenne helps liquefy mucus.

Ingredients:

10 cups water, or chicken or vegetable broth

2 tablespoons chopped ginger root

10 chopped scallions

3 cups bean sprouts

3 tablespoons tamari

1/2 teaspoon red pepper, or to taste

1 teaspoon turmeric

1 bulb (not 1 clove) garlic, minced

Juice of one lemon

Saute scallions, garlic, and ginger root in extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Add water or broth. Bring to a boil, and add seasonings and bean sprouts.  Add greens (collards, kale, beet greens) or other veggies (daikon root, cabbage, shredded carrots, broccoli) as desired.

Screening mammograms:

Swiss Medical Board Findings

Normal thermog photo
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

A number of our patients have forwarded to us news regarding the recent findings of the Swiss Medical Board on mammography.

The Swiss Board concluded that mammography prevented perhaps one death for every 1000 women screened, while harming many others. They reported that, for every  breast cancer death prevented in the United States with annual screening of women from 50 to 60 years old, 490 to 670 women were likely to have a false positive, 70 to 100 an unnecessary biopsy, and up to 14 a breast cancer that would never have become problematic. They noted the inadequacy of mammography in screening women with dense breasts, and they noted several other disadvantages. For these reasons, they recommended the termination of systematic mammography screening programs.

I have never advocated annual screening mammograms. This does not mean that I never recommend mammograms. When a breast thermography comes back with questionable findings, I urge my patients to go for anatomic imaging. When a lump is discovered, I urge my patients to go for anatomic imaging. Our patients at Pacific Naturopathic naturally prefer ultrasound when ultrasound is an option, but ultrasound can not always give the required information. We are then left with mammography or, in certain circumstances, MRIs. This would be appropriate use of mammography, in my opinion.

For screening, we utilize annual breast thermography, with more frequent breast thermography to assess whether treatment protocols are effectively changing risk ratings on breasts with questionable findings. Thermography has the advantage of safety. Dense breasts are not a problem. And thermography gives us a way to track differences in breast tissue over time, often long before a lump or bump would show up on a mammogram. Seeing a condition as it develops, we can often reverse the condition. I call that preventive medicine.

Intravenous Nutritional Therapy

iv photoThis is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.

Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy.  If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.

Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs.  Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.

We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort.  You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.

At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments.  If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.

We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat.  They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.

We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax.  Shipping is free!

Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost.  Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.

There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health.  Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.

At Pacific Naturopathic, we offer evidence-based, integrated approaches to most acute and chronic health concerns. Bone health, breast health, men's health and prostate care, hormonal balance for both women and men, elimination of all types of bodily pain -- both mechanical and metabolic -- acute and chronic, autoimmunity, cancer, cardiovascular health, inflammation, digestion, pediatrics, and metabolic cleansing are particular areas of interest to our practitioners. To encourage patient participation, we offer both guided self-help protocols and comprehensive doctor assisted protocols.  Our patients tell us they particularly appreciate our doctors, practitioners, and staff for our caring attitudes and commitment to service.
