Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Happy October!

WalkRun Thank You!!

Our 18th Annual Walk/Run event was held last Saturday, September 30. It was a beautiful day -- the weather was lovely, the participants were full of energy and fun, and our staff and volunteers inspired us with their teamwork. The greatest joy is seeing survivors with their friends and families, celebrating life and being embraced by our community. Everything went off without a hitch, and attendance was even higher than last year. We hope everyone had a great time. We definitely did!

The Community Expo and BBQ were especially fun and lively this year. We are so grateful to all the vendors and nonprofits who spent the day with us, and to Dutra Enterprises for providing a great lunch.

Thanks to you, our generous sponsors and donors, our fundraising efforts have been very successful. Even before the Walk started, we reached our $15,000 milestone on CrowdRise. THAT IS AMAZING!!! We send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated and spread the word. A special thanks to those of you who set up your own fundraising profiles and rallied support from your networks. And last but not least, a big thanks to East Bay Community Foundation for matching those online donations!

We will continue to raise funds on CrowdRise throughout October as we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please consider a donation (every bit counts!) if you haven't already, and feel free to share this link through email and social media:

Your generosity is what keeps us going. We will be able to provide Hope, Empowerment, Renewal, and Support to more women as they recover from breast cancer treatment. Your donations support our program stores and enable us to provide bras, prostheses, lymphedema garments to survivors, regardless of their financial circumstances.
EDA Season of Change
Announcement about Executive Director transition

After a long, hot summer it seems that Fall is finally here. As the seasons change, sometimes life does too. Our esteemed Executive Director, Vera Packard, has accepted a great new position at Lazarex Cancer Foundation. Her last day at HERS Cancer Foundation was  October 4. We are so grateful to her for her many years of devoted service to HERS, our clients, and the community. At Lazarex, she will continue the important  work of helping cancer patients and their families, and we wish her all the best in her new endeavor.

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation faces this change with  a positive outlook and strong support. Vera's leadership and hard work has put the organization in very good financial and operational shape. The staff and volunteers are committed, compassionate, and highly competent. The board is comprised of talented professionals who are dedicated to the organization's mission and vision, as well as to keeping all programs and services running smoothly. We have been planning the transition, and have begun searching for a new Executive Director. In the meantime, necessary contingency measures have been implemented. The board will actively oversee and support the staff and services throughout the transition.

We'll keep our community of clients and supporters up to date on any developments through this newsletter and our Facebook page. If you have any questions, please email:

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in joining the board or learning more about the ED position, please email us at the address above.

Please join us in wishing Vera well and thanking her for her leadership, hard work, compassion, and commitment to building happier and healthier communities.
Vera A Message from Vera

Dear Friends,

This is a bittersweet moment for me, but life is a journey and I will now write a new chapter in my life. It has been amazing ride of nine years. I close this chapter with joy for the wonderful experiences lived, pride for the accomplishments we were able to make and with immense gratitude for the people I met and the lessons I learned. I hope I have done my job well in setting up HERS for continued success. As I said to many people this past month as I closed my activities at HERS, we built a one-story house with a solid foundation and now the new ED can feel confident to build the second floor.

The HERS Breast Cancer Foundation will always have a special place in my heart and I will keep watching its progress and evolution. I didn't establish this organization -- thanks to Tricia McMahon for her founding work 19 years ago -- but I feel like a stepmother that has raised someone else's child and now watches as she goes off to college.

My deepest gratitude to the HERS family, board, staff, donors, and volunteers that accepted me with open arms nine years ago and allowed me to lead this organization to growth and expansion.

"Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow" (Melody Beattie). With this feeling in my heart I am confident that HERS Breast Cancer Foundation will continue to deliver its mission  to the clients with compassion, efficiency and respect for many years to come.

Sincerely,
Vera Packard
