WM logo
You may  have heard the news by now-starting Monday, June 1st,  Waste Managem ent will be picking up our trash and recyclables.

The biggest changes for now are single stream recycling (more information follows) and who to call if there is a problem. There will be some other changes over time.

Here are the facts:
  1. Trash and Recycling pick up day remains the same (until further notice)

  2. Recycling is now SINGLE STREAM. This means all recyclables can go in the same bin. No sorting needed, and as before, only those items that can be recycled are allowed (paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, plastic containers numbers 1-7, no foam, no plastic bags) Click for Recycling guidelines

  3. For bulky items, call Waste Management at least 24 hours in advance to arrange for pick up, 1-800-972-4545

  4. To report a missed pick upcall Waste Management at sssssssssss 1-800-972-4545 or enter it at www.SeeClickFix.com/Salem_MA

  5. Waste Management has committed to placing empty barrels and containers neatly on the sidewalk. If this does not happen, call them. 1-800-972-4545
Other things to know-
  • Trash must be out before 7 am on pick up day. Pick up can happen any time before 6 pm WM truck

  • Only trash in covered cans can be put out the night before, and only after
    7 pm.
No loose bags can be placed on the curb overnight

  • Trash limits remain the same-maximum of 3 barrels or three
35 gallon bags weighing no more than 50 lbs each

  • You can still bring materials to the Salem Transfer Station at
12 Swampscott Road. Hours of operation, limits, requirements, and rates are available at www.salem.com/Pages/SalemMA_Recycling/transfer

  • This change has no impact on curbside compost collection, which is handled under a different contract with Black Earth Compost. Curbside compost will continue to be picked up weekly on your regular collection day.
Coming Down the Pike-
  • If for some reason the truck does not take your items, Waste Management will leave a sticker explaining why. Note-the stickers are being printed now, so this will not happen right away. Until then, call them at 1-800-972-4545

  • Eventually toters will be provided for trash and recyclables

  • At some point recycling will change from weekly pickup to every-other-week.
