February 2018
Dear Clear Creek Educational Community,

Roslin Marshall, Superintendent
February promises to be a busy month for students and staff.    One way in which parents can stay informed about their student's progress is to attend a parent teacher conference this month.    CCSD will be hosting parent teacher conferences on  Wednesday February 14  and on Thursday February 15, 2018.    Please contact your school for specific information about attending conferences for your child.    CCSD recognizes that not all parents are able to attend parent teacher conferences.  In this case, parents are welcome to  reach out to their child's teacher via email to learn about student progress this year.

Now that we are well into the second semester it is an optimum time to touch base with your child's teacher.    Student performance is enhanced when parents, teachers and students are in communication about academic goals. Our aim is to help each student achieve success and we welcome parent participation in this process.

SALE OF THE DISTRICT OFFICE IS APPROVED

The Clear Creek School Board of Education (CCSD BOE) is pleased to announced that they have approved a contract for the sale of the District Office property to lane3co LLC for the price of $2,250,000. Part of the terms of the contract include a period of due diligence and inspection that could influence the closing date within the next 6 months.
The CCSD BOE has provided a directive to the Superintendent to develop a plan for the Board to consider that would prioritize how the proceeds from the sale of the district office could be best utilized to fund major outstanding and deferred maintenance needs. Proceeds from the sale of this property cannot be used for staff compensation or other operating expenses.
This property has been on the market for approximately two years and it is our best hope that this property will be developed to meet needs that exist within Clear Creek County. It is anticipated that the District Office will continue to operate out of this current location for up to two years.
Sincerely,
Roslin Marshall and Mitch Houston

CCHS Students Travel to D.C. for Leadership Conference

CCHS National Honor Society members Anna Wann, Kaysie Sparks, Maya Daly, Abbey Gothman, and Keyara Vieweg travelled to Washington, D.C. to attend the LEAD Conference (January 26th-28th). This national conference brought together Student Council and National Honor Society members from throughout the country.  At LEAD, students and advisers sharpen their leadership skills to improve their school culture and community while networking with their peers from around the country.

Our group of participants presented a workshop entitled "Don't Compete! Collaborate!". They discussed the challenges of being involved in multiple sports and multiple clubs. They also presented solutions for how to support collaboration between clubs in order to create a stronger student culture and community.

Principal,Elizabeth Gardner, and NHS Adviser, Skyler Artes, accompanied the students to Washington, D.C. The workshop was an overwhelming success with many learning opportunities.  We are so proud of our students' accomplishment at this national platform!

CCMS Seventh Grade Students Learn Global Economics

Seventh graders at Clear Creek Middle School participated in a field trip called International Towne.  International Towne teaches students about global economics through hands-on experiential learning.
Mr. James, CCMS's Geography teacher, taught global economics concepts to his students weeks before the students went on the field trip. Students were broken up into groups that were each assigned a country. Students spent their group time researching their assigned countries and learning about their countries' economic systems.
At International Towne, the students were given passports, currency, costumes, and a designated area (their country) to interact with other global citizens.  The Towne is a life-like simulation of a global marketplace where students physically apply concepts they've learned as they step into roles as world citizens.  All this takes place on-site at the Denver Young Americans Center in a 5,000 square foot space designed to be a 16- country mini world.

Therapy Dog News
There are some exciting updates to the Therapy Dog Program at CCHS. There is a new Therapy Dog Lounge where the therapy dog on duty will be located for the majority of the day for students to drop in and get some stress relief. The dogs will need walks and potty breaks throughout the day, so the therapy dogs may be seen walking through the hallway or outside as well.  The lounge itself is a work in progress and is being decorated to be a warm and welcoming environment for students.

There are 1-2 Therapy Dog Handler positions open to students who are animal lovers and/or interested in animal-related careers such as veterinary science.  They will be trained and will receive .5 credits for the Therapy Dog Handler class.  Mrs. Phipps is the lead handler.

The Middle school is using the therapy dogs for PBIS. Forms will be developed so that therapy dogs can be "checked out" for a class period.

We are so glad to be able to offer this opportunity to our students!

Safe Driving Education for Students

Virtual Reality Drunk Driving Simulation

With the annual launch of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday campagin, the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration developed a virtual reality web experience that allows users to walk through the aftermath of a drunk driving crash as a first responder.

This upsetting virtual reality provides a harsh perspective on the dangers of driving under the influence. Parents may choose to have their teen drivers watch this video, but should screen it first by clicking  HERE  .
