Artistic Director's Message

Dear Friends,

Behind every piece of music we present there lies a story that needs to be told. At our recent concert on November 9th at Benaroya Hall, we explored the lives and works of two composers from the Nazi-occupied Netherlands: Leo Smit and Dick Kattenburg.  If you were there, you surely remember how the audience was swept away by the youthful Kattenburg's captivating Tap Dance and his engaging Escapades. You can click here to watch them again or see them for the first time.

I want you to be the first to know about a very special program on January 27th.  That date marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and to mark this important moment in history MOR will offer a commemoration concert at Benaroya Hall. The 5:00 pm event is free and open to the entire community, so I urge you to sign up early early for a complimentary ticket. You'll find more details below. You'll also find information about a special ticket offer for the two exciting concerts that remain in our regular season.

I'll look forward to seeing and hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mina

Jewish Life in Germany: Past, Present and Future

MOR was one of eight organizations in North America invited to Berlin by the German government to participate in the week-long program "Jewish Life in Germany: Past, Present and Future." The schedule included in-depth briefings at the Interior and Foreign Ministries, extended conversations with leaders of educational and human rights organizations, and opportunities to spend time with members of Berlin's growing Jewish community. For many of us it will always be difficult to visit Germany without being haunted by historical memories and our personal ghosts. But one can only be impressed by the honesty of today's Germany in confronting its own past, and by the consistency of its efforts to build a democratic and tolerant society. We're grateful to to the German government for hosting us for this enriching and enlightening experience.
