It's Okay to be Socially Awkward:
It May Mean You're Going to be Successful

In our society, it's the extroverted, effervescent individuals who tend to get the attention, and it's the socially awkward folks who are urged to be, well, less awkward and more social. However, Ty Tashiro, author of Awkward: The Science of Why We're Socially Awkward and Why That's Awesome, explains why the socially awkward often possess more talent and foresight than our culture gives them credit for.
July Safety Council Luncheon This Wednesday
Topic: Creating Drug-Free Workplaces

Given the drug epidemic that's rocking the state of Ohio and the nation as a whole, the topic of this month's Safety Council Luncheon is particularly relevant to our times and vitally important to local business leaders.  F eatured speaker Don Ogden brings a wealth of experience to his discussion on how employers can create and maintain a drug-free workplace.

As the D irector of the Behavioral Medicine Department for Trinity Health System in Steubenville, Ohio, Ogden has presented hundreds of workshops and trainings on the topics of Adolescent Substance Abuse, Compassion Fatigue, Drug-Free Workplace, Medication Assisted Treatment, Opioid Addiction, Conflict Resolution, and Trauma-Informed Care.  Ogden has been employed by Trinity for the past 29 years and received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Akron University as well as Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology  and a Master's in Business Administration.  As a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor and a Licensed Social Worker, he has served as a member of the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery Board, the Jefferson County Anti-Drug Coalition, the Jefferson County Juvenile Drug Court, and Trinity's Opiate Drug Task Force.

If you would like to attend this important Safety Council Luncheon, please RSVP by Monday, July 17th. More information and a link to register and pay online are below.  You may also pay at the door but please RSVP so that our caterer is ensured an accurate count.  All chamber members, their employees and their guests are welcome at this event and any monthly Safety Council luncheon. You need not be a member of Safety Council to attend.  Please come out and be a part of this important program.
Kudos to these Chamber member businesses  who receive this week's
"I Get It" award.
The UPS Store in Hollywood Plaza, Steubenville welcomes customers with a friendly and creative message on their (very clean) front door showing their pride in the local community and in being a small business owner.
The Wednesday morning crew this past week at Steubenville Downtown Bakery exemplified exactly what the Chamber hopes to see at all local businesses.  An out-of-towner had stopped in when interviewing for a local job a few weeks back and the young lady who waited on him was  engaging and friendly wishing him luck and telling him he'd be back once he tried their products. Turns out he got the job and stopped in on Wednesday, his very first day, to get Smiley cookies for his new co-workers.

Parade of Gun Bills Infringing on Employers' Private Property Rights Continues

With the passage of House Bill 233 out of the Ohio House today, the chipping away of a business’ private property rights continues. Late last year, the legislature passed Senate Bill 199 banning employers from prohibiting firearms in private vehicles on their property, also known as parking lot carry. The bill also included a provision preventing an employer or property owner from having a policy that has the “effect” of prohibiting parking lot carry.

While employers were still trying to determine what is and is not allowed under this amorphous has the “effect” of prohibiting language, the legislature took it one step further. Rather than try to clarify the law, the legislature determined it should punish employers for non-compliance and let the courts sort it out.

Protecting the Right to Take a Risk

As Americans joined with family and friends to celebrate the 4th of July last week, we had an opportunity to set aside our divisions and focus on those things that unite us and set our nation apart. Among those are the principles of free enterprise that have allowed America to become the most dynamic, prosperous, innovative, and opportunity-rich economy on the planet. It’s up to all of us to ensure that those principles not only survive but thrive.

One of the foundations of our free enterprise system is the right to take a risk, start a business, fail, and try again. This right has enabled millions of Americans to build their own success stories from the ground up. It has allowed them to pursue a dream, taste the thrill of achievement, and feel proud that they did it through their own pluck and hard work. And when there are failures along the way, they make eventual success and achievement that much sweeter.

Today in History

-  July 14, 1850  -

America felt the chill of refrigeration for the first time when Florida physician John Gorrie performed one of history's most revolutionary party tricks: demonstrating his mechanical icemaker for an amazed crowd of merrymakers. His goal in making ice mechanical was to help his sickest patients survive the hot summer months by cooling them down and relieving their fevers. However, ice was expensive at the time, so he needed an inexpensive way to produce it. Although his invention ended up changing the world, Gorrie himself met a tragic end and became a laughingstock in the press. For the whole story,  check out this article
