Groveport Madison HS Alum, Le'Veon Bell, Donates Funds to Purchase Synthetic Athletic Field
We are very excited to announce that Groveport Madison High School alum and Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Le'Veon Bell has committed to donate $750,000 to cover the installation of a synthetic turf athletic field at GMHS.

In the agreement with Bell, the Board of Education approved a naming rights contract whereby the athletic field will be renamed "Le'Veon Bell Field at Cruiser Stadium." Work on the new synthetic turf field is expected to begin June 9, with completion expected in approximately 60 days. A dedication event is tentatively slated for August 25 - the Cruiser's first, home football game of the 2017 season.

"This is an incredible gift to the Groveport Madison Schools community," said Superintendent Bruce Hoover. "Le'Veon and his mother, Lisa, give credit to many people at GMHS, most particularly to coach Bryan Schoonover, for helping Le'Veon during his high school years. This gift speaks to the power of strong, trusting relationships between our students and staff. It also demonstrates the power and connection between our schools and our alumni - and what it means to be a Cruiser."

Elementary Gifted Program to Move to Sedalia ES This Fall
teacher_students.jpg
Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, the District's gifted education program will be located in 12 new modular classrooms that are currently being installed at Sedalia Elementary School.

By consolidating the program from three schools into one school, we will be able to serve gifted-eligible students in first through fifth grade with Gifted Intervention Specialists (GISs) in reading and mathematics. Very few districts in our area offer comprehensive gifted education services from first through fifth grade. Students in first and second grade will be able to receive gifted education services every day, rather than just one day per week. This will not only increase instructional time for the students, it also will allow their teachers to more effectively deliver gifted education services to them.

District Launches 1:1 Technology Program
At the start of the 2017-18 school year, students in grades six through 12 will be issued a Google Chromebook to use for their coursework at school and home.

The District is making the technology available to students in order to promote creativity and collaboration in the classroom and better prepare students for college and career, said Garilee Ogden, director of curriculum, instruction, and professional development. The devices will provide students access to the most up-to-date information for learning and allow for learning to extend beyond the classroom, she said.

"The long term impact on our students in a 1:1 setting will help ensure that students are able to be literate in technology and in the digital world that we live in," she said. "Students will have the ability to produce assignments, work together, research, and problem solve much more efficiently, and be better prepared for the future. Technology and devices are a large part of the workplaces, which they will move into someday."

Cruiser Softball Team Wins the Ohio Capital Conference - Runners-up in District Final
The members of the Cruiser Softball team continually show up ready to work and it pays off, says Coach Chris Downing.

The team, which won the Ohio Capital Conference last month, also were the runners-up in the district tournament final held at Pickerington Central on May 20. They lost to the Lancaster Gales softball team 5-4. "They're excited about winning the league," said Downing, who became head coach of the team last year.

The team, which included many returning starters, went 25-6 for the season. They were undefeated in their conference.

The team's willingness to pull together has definitely contributed to its success, Downing said. The players also enjoy one another's company, which comes across both on the field and off of the field, he said.

"They're very hard workers. They're very coachable," he said. "It's been a great season."

Remember to Pick Up Students' Medication Before School Ends
Parents of students who have medication(s) stored at their child's school are reminded to pick up all meds no later than 2 p.m., Thursday, June 1. Medications should be picked up in the school's health clinic.

A parent or guardian must pick up the medications, as medications are not permitted to be sent home with the student. Any medications left at school after the deadline will be disposed of according to District policy.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please call your child's school to speak to the school nurse. It has been a pleasure taking care of your child this school year and thank you for your continued cooperation and partnership.
New High School Construction Update
It's hard to believe that just a year ago there was a big pile of dirt where the new high school was to be constructed. Today, more than 90 percent of the concrete block work and more than 15 percent of the exterior brickwork is complete. It's amazing how far we've come in such a short time.

The athletic portion of the building (the north end) is furthest along, with electricians, plumbers, insulators and a myriad of other skilled workers moving with efficient precision to complete their list of tasks.

The center portion of the building, the dining commons, is already under roof, and sheet metal workers have been busy installing the duct work throughout the first-floor offices. Work also continues on the second floor of the academic wings, with the walls nearing their full height. The academic wing should be under roof within the next several weeks.

We're very pleased with the progress of the building. The project remains on schedule and within budget.

Be sure to check out the construction pictures and aerial progress videos on our website at   gocruisers.org/constructionupdate.aspx.

Protect Your Family from Measles
Measles can be dangerous, especially for children. Measles is very contagious and can make children so sick they have to go to a hospital. In some cases it can be fatal.
