March 20, 2015

Based on the outstanding success of addressing crime in specific hot spots of the 46th Ward, the targeted task force that I established 2 years ago with the Cook County State's Attorney's Community Justice Center and Chicago Police District 19, will be expanding its boundaries. This work with residents and local businesses in helping to report and prosecute crimes in this area has lead to a 39% reduction in crime along Wilson Ave

The Wilson Corridor Committee which has focused on Wilson between Broadway and Sheridan will extend its boundaries to include more businesses in this effort. My office has contacted businesses on Wilson Avenue from Broadway to Racine and on Broadway from Wilson to Lawrence to include them in the committee. The key to success with this intervention has been the collaboration of stakeholders in the community. We are at our strongest as a community when we are working together.

The local businesses involved in this committee have been diligent in calling 911 when they see any suspicious or criminal activity. I urge you to do the same if you see anything suspicious. Additionally please follow up with me or the 19th District CAPS Office with any questions at 312-744-0064.

   Best,

OPEN OFFICE HOURS EVERY MONDAY
Every Monday from 5pm - 7pm, residents can stop by the 46th Ward Office to see Ald. Cappleman with no appointment necessary. Also, Ald. Cappleman regularly visits residents living in larger buildings for a question/answer session about the happenings throughout the ward and the city. If you would like to schedule a meeting, email us at info@james46.org or call 773-878-4646.

ADDRESSING HOMELESSNESS UNDER THE VIADUCTS
Ald. Cappleman asked the City to step up its efforts to find housing for people living under the Wilson & Lawrence viaducts along Lake Shore Drive. In response, Thresholds was awarded a grant specifically to reach vulnerable populations and they are beginning this program at these two viaducts. Thresholds was chosen because they are well known for successfully getting people stuck in the cycle of chronic homelessness into permanent housing. Other involved social services will be encouraged to coordinate and collaborate with Thresholds to facilitate this intervention that is focused on stronger outcome measures.

ADDRESSING RECIDIVISM AT COOK COUNTY JAIL
At Ald. Cappleman's urging, the City will be launching a new initiative  in collaboration with the Cook County Sheriff's Office where Chicago residents released from Cook County Jail and in need of ongoing mental health services will be linked to a provider upon exiting for ongoing treatment and support services. This effort will be another step to end the revolving door of people with serious mental illness going in and out of jail. Ald. Cappleman is pleased that Thresholds has been awarded this grant as well.

EARLY VOTING BEGINS THIS MONDAY, MARCH 23
There will be a run-off election for both Mayor and Alderman in the 46th Ward. You can vote in the run-off election even if you didn't vote in February's election. Early voting will be at Truman College (free parking in the garage) and other city-wide locations
