The Art & Soul of Spring
Ooh-la-la, Scheepers Hybrid Tulips
There are few Tulip families that have received more acclaim than French Tulips that are, in fact, our very own Scheepers Hybrids.

In 1930, genetic-powerhouse Tulip Mrs. John T. Scheepers was born. She was named in honor of Rose Heywood Scheepers of Troy, Ohio, the wife of legendary Dutchman Johannes Theodore Scheepers who popularizing Tulips, Narcissi and Amaryllis in the U.S. through John Scheepers Beauty from Bulbs, founded in 1908. Tetraploid Tulip Mrs. John T. Scheepers gave birth to jewel-toned off-spring that are among the most widely grown, award-winning Tulips of all time.

A Rainbow of Perfect Off-Spring
Part of the Single Late Tulip class, Scheepers Hybrid Tulips are available in a luscious range of colors: white, ivory, yellow, orange-red, fuchsia-red, apricot-rose, salmon-pink and yellow/red bicolors. Hardy for horticultural zones 3 through 8, they all inherited their mother's imperious height, curvaceous chalice shape and indomitable vitality.

Today, there are also grandchildren gracing American gardens: double and semi-double Tulips Double Maureen and Menton Exotic. Blooming in May in horticultural zone 5 depending on the weather, Tulips Maureen and Menton bloom about two weeks later than their siblings, making them two of the latest Tulips to bloom. Each variety is as perfect for glorious display gardens as it is for stunning cut flower arrangements. Plant a cutting garden: your Tulips will be larger and more perfect than those from even the finest florist.

Each of these varieties is available for reserve orders as of this moment, although Tulip Mrs. John T. Scheepers is in very limited supply. Bulb size: 12 cm.

Scheepers Hybrid Tulip Tips
Hardy from HZ 3-8, Scheepers Hybrid Tulip bulbs should be planted in the fall once the soil has cooled down to about 55°F, after two weeks of night time temperatures hovering in the 40s. Prior to planting, store the bulbs in a cool, dry spot (50°F  to 70°F) with good air circulation and low humidity, away from heat, frost and strong sunlight.

Tulip bulbs require well-draining, neutral pH soil with at least six hours of daily sunlight. They hate to get wet feet and should not be planted in areas with poor water drainage or standing water. Plant Tulip bulbs 6" to 8" deep and 6" apart with the pointed tip up, and the basal plate (bottom of the bulb where the roots grow) down. They should not be planted in outdoor containers or raised beds where they experience temperature spiking and repeat cycles of freezing and thawing that result in root system destruction.
Top dress the planting site with a 4-10-6 organic granular fertilizer after planting in the fall to promote root growth. (Never add anything to planting holes.) Water lightly during a prolonged dry periods. Apply no more than a 2" layer of mulch after the surface of the ground freezes to protect the bulbs from temperature spiking. Some good mulches include straw, salt marsh hay or oak leaves.

By nature, Tulips are not perennials, with the exception of Species Tulips and Greigii Tulips that may perennialize. Giant Darwin Hybrid Tulips may also come back for repeat years of bloom if not picked for bouquets, if the flower is deadheaded , and if the stems and foliage are allowed to thrive unfettered for six to eight weeks until they die back naturally for maximum photosynthesis and chlorophyll production that nourishes the bulb. Hardy bulbs are best left in the ground to regenerate.
