Inspiring all girls
to be strong, smart, and bold

DECEMBER 2016
WITH YOU IN HER CORNER...SHE WILL SUCCEED.
"By teaching girls about our country’s voting process, and their rights within that process, we send them a clear message that their engagement with our democracy is inextricably linked to their futures. We teach them that they are powerful, and that each of their voices matter."

HELP US FINISH 2016 STRONG FOR GIRLS
Year-End Appeal:
Meet Marsha, Girls Inc. Alumna and Supporter
“Having a girls-only environment where girls learn how to stick together, to support one another, to learn from one another and to learn how to express themselves, was so important to my growing up. Every girl needs that regardless of her socio-economic or cultural background. Without Girls Inc., this 'place' does not exist for girls in our community.”

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
CALM's Great Beginnings Prevention and Early Intervention Program Comes to the SBC
Thanks to a grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation, CALM's Great Beginnings Prevention and Early Intervention Program is providing the Santa Barbara Center with onsite counseling and consultation every week. The program seeks to reduce vulnerabilities and promote protective factors in the child, the caregiver, the teacher, and the community in which they live.  The program also promotes positive social and emotional development and aims to prevent, identify, and reduce the impact of mental health problems among girls.
STRONG, SMART, BOLD IN ACTION
Fearless Flyers at the Santa Barbara Center

In "Fearless Flyers," the girls at the Santa Barbara Center have been learning about the science of aviation, about famous female pilots of the past and present, and about how to create their own flying creations! Wind resistance, aerodynamics and altitude are just some of the concepts they learned throughout the quarter. Girls took a field trip to the Santa Barbara Airport to hear what it takes to become a pilot (from one of the female captains!) and how math and different terminology are used to navigate a plane.

Mind+Body = Mindfulness at Goleta Valley Center

As a part of implementing the Girls Inc. Mind+Body Toolkit, girls at Goleta Valley have been practicing mindfulness techniques by participating in activities that draw attention to the connection between the mind and body. Through mindful eating, meditative nature walks, bubble breathing exercises, and yoga, girls are making their minds and bodies strong.
