Inspiring all girls
to be strong, smart, and bold

FEBRUARY 2017
WITH YOU IN HER CORNER...SHE WILL SUCCEED.
February 19-25 is National Engineering Week
As part of our STEM focus at Girls Inc., we celebrate the field of engineering and we honor female engineer role models like Gretchen W. McClain, who played a pivotal leadership role in the successful development and launch of the International Space Station Program as Chief Director of the Space Station, and Deputy Director of Space Flight at NASA (see photos) .

Below, learn more about Gretchen, our honored speaker at the April 27th One Hundred Committee Scholarship Luncheon, "Inspiring the Next Generation of Girls in STEM.”
STEM UPDATE
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
Girls Join UCSB's Gevirtz Graduate School of Education for "Curie-osity" Project Studying Women in STEM
A collaborative effort between the McEnroe Reading Clinic at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and Girls Inc.of Greater Santa Barbara, the Curie-osity Project introduces young women in grades 4-6 to the women scientists and engineers of the UC Santa Barbara community.

From now until May, girls from the Goleta Valley and Santa Barbara Centers will visit the UCSB campus where they will meet and interview a different female scientist each week. Girls will compile their interviews, take picutres of their scientists and compile their findings into a book at the end of the project. We are excited to partner with UCSB for this new project that incorporates literacy into our STEM education for girls. This exciting opportunity also exposes girls to academic life on a college campus. Watch for their blog and more project updates on social media! @girlsincsb
Chemistry is COOL at the Santa Barbara Center

In our "SMART" class, Chemistry is Cool, girls practiced how to think like a scientist, learning how to predict, experiment, observe, and report! Each week the girls participated in a variety of experiments, learned about different careers in the STEM fields, and many famous female STEM leaders (like Gretchen McClain!)
