Student & Staff Service Projects

Families First Program a Big Success
The Saint Andrew community has once again shown its capacity to give! In our partnership with Catholic Charities (CCFW), the first of three projects took place September 21st - October 2nd. Students in the Sixth grade visited CCFW and were given an orientation to learn about the programs offered by Catholic Charities. They volunteered in the warehouse, cleaned buses and took a tour of the facilities.
On their return, the Sixth grade Student Council led the school in collecting household cleaning items for the Families First Program. We collected over 216 items to be donated back to CCFW for families in need. This program is a great example of the impact our school has on the community. It is also a great example of the importance of Catholic education and how students learn at a very young age to take care of those who are less fortunate.
We are very proud of our students and families for all that they do to serve the community and each other.

A Day of Fun at the Fall Festival
Painted faces, obstacle courses, basketball madness and an amazing maze were just a few of the fun things to do at the school's annual Fall Festival on Sunday, October 11th. The campus was transformed into a carnival like atmosphere that began with a pep rally on the Friday before the event.
Preliminary numbers put the school right around $54,000 raised between the festival itself and the raffle. More than that, it always serves as a wonderful community builder for our campus.
The good Lord blessed our community with beautiful weather and it truly was a day of smiles, laughter and many examples of faith in action. We thank all of our volunteers who made this day possible. A special thanks goes to Jeanette Sweany, Terri Guhl (Festival Chairs) and Bernadette Escamilla-Taylor and Molly Taylor (Raffle Chairs).

Annual Fund Push Begins
With the Fall Festival behind us, we turn our focus toward the Annual Fund as we seek to raise $275,000 and increase our percentage of giving to over 85%. Currently, we are at $196,000 with 25% in giving. Prayerfully consider your Annual Fund donation if you have not already done so.
Every
student benefits from Annual Fund.
As I sit and write this newsletter in our new Development and Communications Office (made possible by Annual Fund), I am watching our Pre-K 4 students laugh, play and run around on the covered playground, which is also made possible by your generosity. Your gifts build strength in what we do as a school.

We thank you for your generosity past and present. Go to the school website and make your donation today. Thank you for all you do to make this the best school in Fort Worth!

Heating & Air Conditioning

Work Begins on Heating & Air Conditioning for the Main Hall
Money raised on North Texas Giving Day is quickly being used as installation of Heating/AC has begun on the front hall. Crews began work on our front hallway on October 23rd.
The school will test the new system before moving forward on the first through third grade hallway. Both hallways should be completed by semester break. Thank you so much for your support of the school to make this project possible.

New Addition to the Campus
|
Human Foosball Comes to Saint Andrew
Saint Andrew Parish has a strong scouting tradition and the school has benefitted from many Eagle Scout projects over the years. The newest addition to the campus is a Human Foosball Court. Former Saint Andrew student, Zach Wempe SAS Class of 2012, spent several months of planning before beginning construction on October 23rd - 24th.
The foosball arena was placed on the south side of the campus between the soccer and baseball fields. Students will simulate the foosball game as it is played on the table-top version. The arena still needs to be painted before play begins.

STEMscopes
Exciting things are happening in the world of science across our classrooms, which regularly turn into fun hands-on labs thanks to our new science curriculum, STEMscopes.
STEMscopes, created by Accelerate Learning partnered with Rice University, is a digital science program used by our Kindergarten - 4th grade students as well as our 6th grade students. Focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), our little scientists are mastering advanced science concepts and having a lot of fun in the process!
In recent weeks, we've seen kindergarteners learn about weather, 1st graders examine the parts of a flower, 2nd graders learn about forms of energy, 3rd graders study mixtures, 4th graders make circuits and 6th graders master identification of substances through density. Through the many tools (online, workbooks and many labs), our budding researchers are making great discoveries everyday!

DAILY FIVE
The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently.
How does it work?
Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring. These choices include:
- Read to Someone
- Listen to Reading
"Daily 5 works in conjunction with all of the Language Arts elements to make the students more proficient readers and writers."
Dina Louden, 2nd Grade Teacher
"I like that we have more time to read and I can read books that I like."
Logan Bettinger, 2nd Grade Student

Teachers across grade levels have met as grade levels as well as vertically to review scores from the IOWA test. These scores are used to provide data about individual student strengths and areas of need within the curriculum. Teachers use this data in combination with other formative assessments to differentiate the curriculum to meet each child's unique needs.
Mrs.
Button and Mrs. King will provide a parent night to give more information regarding IOWA and Cogat scores, along with explanations and purposes of the assessment on Wednesday, November 18th.

Bishop Olson Visits Our Campus
What an amazing day! We had the honor of celebrating Mass with Bishop Olson on Wednesday,
October
14th.
Bishop Olson began the morning with a beautiful Mass and then spent the next few hours visiting classrooms and connecting with our students. It was wonderful for our students to have some one-on-one time with our Bishop. The students promised to pray for Bishop Olson as he said he would pray for each of our students.
Thank you, Bishop Olson, for spending so much time with all of our students and being so open to questions and leading our students to Christ!

Little Saint of Great Mercy
|
For the first time in sixty years, two Franciscan schools in the Fort Worth Diocese united for a day of reflection and retreat. Eighth graders from Saint Andrew joined Saint Maria Goretti's eighth graders for Mass, reflection, activities, and lunch before jumping aboard the buses to Dallas to visit Saint Maria Goretti's relics.
Students were mixed in groups and participated in the Rosary along with praise and worship songs on the bus ride to Saint Monica's. Students viewed Maria Goretti's relics and distributed flower prayer cards to the mile long line of visitors. This experience really brought her story to life for many of our students.
Enjoy this short video.
From its very beginning, the Catholic Church has regarded the relics of saints as among its most sacred possessions. A tour with the sacred remains of St. Maria Goretti, the Patroness of Mercy, became a natural choice for the Church to promote the Year of Mercy.
