Volunteers needed to knit hats for Para athletes
Organizers of next year’s Ontario Parasport Games in Durham are putting out the call to local knitters to knit. The Durham Region 2019 Ontario Parasport Games will be held from Feb. 8 to 10 with 400 to 500 athletes expected to compete in 11 events.

To welcome them to Durham, organizers are looking for volunteers to knit tuques for each of the athletes.“We’re committed to making these games memorable for the athletes and as sustainable as possible,” said Don Terry, co-chair of the organizing committee for the games. “This tuque knitting initiative supports both those goals.”

Volunteer knitters will receive a pattern, a ball of wool to make one tuque, a tag with the logo for the games to be sewn on and a postcard to accompany the tuque so a personal message can be delivered to the athletes along with the new tuque. The Ontario-sourced wool was provided at a discount by The Philosopher’s Wool Company.

“The owners loved the motivations for this initiative and wanted to be part of it,” said Terry. “They are a fair trade company, producing wool yarn that is as natural and organic as possible.”
To sign up to knit a tuque, contact Donna Anderson at [email protected].

Interestingly - the Pickering Soccer Centre will be hosting Blind Soccer as part of the Ontario Parasport Games.
Transportation to In Motion
One of the barriers for people attending the In Motion program is the lack of public transportation to our facility. We are working on partnering with a local business who is looking into providing bus service to our program on Tuesday mornings.

Do you know of anyone who is not attending our program due to transportation issues.

Please contact Tammy ASAP.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
PROGRAM FUNDRAISING
An easy start to fundraising for the In Motion program is to start collecting liquor bottles again.
So please help us by collecting, gathering and bringing in your (your neighbors, your children's, your friends) liquor bottles, every week. We will use the funds to offset our program costs when our grant funding is complete .

UPCOMING ELECTIONS
Will you be attending any of the local candidate debates/ discussions?
If you are attending any discussions, it might be worth it to talk about our In Motion program, the educational, recreational, and social benefits of our program and ask our local councilors/ candidates about funding opportunities for the In Motion program. Let our local candidates know how much you love our program!!!!
Last year, the Pickering Soccer club applied for the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund, as a way to generate new programs that could expand our club and our facility. Our application was accepted, and the In Motion program was implemented.

In Motion is a FREE Active Living Program for Adults 55+ that incorporates Health & Wellness Education, Recreational Activities and Social Interaction. Our members have been meeting once a week since January – and this program has steadily grown from 18 participants the first week to over 100 regular participants and over 200 members.

As we enter into the final stages of our grant funding, we are now planning for the program’s sustainability. Our In Motion participants have been very vocal about their hopes that this program continues once the funding is complete. We would like to ensure that happens, because the educational, recreational and social opportunities this program has created, has had such a positive impact on our members.
