A Message from Your
AMTA-KY Chapter President

Thank You! Thank you for wanting to join together, to network, to build & support your AMTA-KY Chapter. We've had 3 brand new volunteers join the board AND the return of a veteran volunteer or two! I knew there were folks out there willing to jump in and do their part. That's what will keep AMTA-KY going!
     Valerie Smothers
BUT WAIT...If you would still like to join the team in a support role, we are ALWAYS looking for volunteers to help out AND...we will be looking for new board members for the 2018-2019 board soon, so start thinking about the role you would like to play in the AMTA-KY Chapter.

The board is currently figuring out their respective roles and trying to plan meet ups and education events...so we'll be looking for registrars and volunteers! Hint, Hint!

Our Summer Meeting will be August 19th at Gateway, Boone Campus in Florence, KY. We will offer  6 CE hours and lunch for some AMAZING prices for membership.

Our Fall Education Day will be November 11th at KY Dam Village in Gilbertsville, KY.  6 CE hours and lunch for, you guessed it, an AMAZING price for members.

Watch your email and ky.amtamassage.org for details!!

Don't forget...I need you, AMTA-KY needs you, and YOU need AMTA-KY.
Hug your families, call your friends, be a community, keep in touch!
Talk soon,
Val

P.S. Feel free to email me with questions, concerns, ideas, awesome stories or a corny massage joke at president@amtaky.org :)
The Latest News from KBLMT
Kentucky licensing boards composed of professionals in the field, some of which also have members-at-large, are being re-structured by Governor's Executive Orders.  This was necessitated by a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling called "N.C. Dental Board v. Federal Trade Commission."

The N. C. Dental Board sent cease and desist letters to non-dentists who were providing teeth-whitening services.  The Supreme Court found that the board's actions were anti-competitive and that board members were subject to liability because the board was not actively supervised by the state.  This means a board that has even one member of the profession being regulated must be supervised by a state agency for board members to avoid being held personally liable for board decisions.

Kentucky's restructuring began last fall, and the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy Chair, Denise Logsdon was called to a meeting on April 28 for the group of boards to be operating under the umbrella of "Boards of Rehabilitative and Health Maintenance Services" (current working title, not permanent).  The meeting was chaired by David Dickerson, Secretary of the Public Protection Cabinet.  Other attendees included representatives of the boards and professional associations of respiratory therapy, interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing, and speech pathologists.   There were 8 boards tentatively under this new agency.

The licensing boards will largely continue to function individually.  The three primary differences will be:
  • boards will be reduced to 5 members.  KBLMT currently has 5 members including one member-at-large and one LMT representing massage schools
  • disciplinary actions that are appealed will be handled by an Executive Director of the new umbrella group, rather than by the practitioners of the licensing board
  • boards will no longer use the lawyers of the state attorney general's office.  The Department of Professional Licensing under the Public Protection Cabinet will provide staffing and legal counsel for the boards.
The boards will continue to regulate and license their respective profession with oversight from the Executive Director and the Commissioner of the Department of Professional Licensing.  The Department of Professional Licensing has replaced the Department of Occupations and Professions.

The proposed umbrella group contains the following boards:
·               Board of Physical Therapy
·               Board of Occupational Therapy
·               Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology
·               Board of Respiratory Care
·               Ky. Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy
·               Ky. Board of Licensure and Certification for Dieticians          and Nutritionists
·               Ky. Board of Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
·               Ky. Board of Licensed Diabetes Educators

There are no changes at this time to contact information for the KBLMT.  The website is still  bmt.ky.gov.

For KBLMT, these changes were to be effective on June 1, 2017.  The next KBLMT meeting will be July 10 at 10:00.
Denise Logsdon, KBLMT, chair

I have 4 beautiful children, Blake, Brittney, Ben and Brett, from a previous marriage. Did you miss vendors at our Spring 2017 meeting?

Let them know!
AMTA-KY had two volunteers contact around 40 different vendors beginning in October 2016. We really didn't have a great response...obviously.
If you see a vendor before next year, let them know how much you missed them. We like to shop local when we can! Encourage them to contact us for next year.
Thank you to Natural Options Aromatherapy for spending your weekend with us!

News you can use about KBLMT!
(Plus a Commentary from Val)

The Office of Occupations and Professions suggests completing your renewal at least six weeks prior to your expiration date.
(Please, these folks are understaffed & overworked)

The regulations for the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy were recently changed to require an FBI Background Check under 201 KAR 42:035 for initial applicants for licensure, and under 201 KAR 42:040 for applicants for renewal who have been convicted of a felony during the previous licensure period. (So, if you are renewing but HAVE NOT committed a felony, you may skip the FBI background check.)

Click on this link to request your FBI background check:
The current processing time to receive your background check back is 13-15 weeks. You will need to request your background check several months in advance of applying. (If you are applying for the first time OR have been convicted of a felony...you better be prepared to wait to work OR plan accordingly and apply for your background check early.)

The applications and forms for initial license and renewal for the Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy are available on our website  http://www.bmt.ky.gov/Pages/applications.aspx(Top of the page under FORMS.) The application shall be completed in its entirety and submitted to this office with the required payment by check or money order made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer.

If you have further questions please contact Board Administrator, Tammy Sharp, at  via email at TammyK.Sharp@ky.gov. (Email is best, that way there is a trail...)

Effective February 2016, a recent, 2x2, passport quality photograph must be attached to all initial and renewal applications (Please Do NOT send a selfie, a picture with your cat, your favorite stuffed animal, the entire family, or a Glamour shot from 1983. Photos must be current...within the last 6 months or so. CVS, the Post Office, MailBoxes Plus, etc. are reasonably priced locations to get a 2x2 passport style photo.)
