Dear Church,
Tonight, as you anticipate celebrating Independence Day, Marsha and I are celebrating the 4th of July in Canada. If you have ever wondered if Canada had a 4th of July, the answer is "Yes, it's between the 3rd and the 5th of July!" (Ha! Calendar humor).
But we will, in our own way, be observing this two-century ritual, l from Banff, Alberta. Both of our fathers were proud Marines, and while both were reluctant to speak of their time in the war theatre, we know that their sacrifice was great...and our nation has remained free. Military personnel are, I think, different from all others when it comes to patriotism. Their tears are real when our flag passes by in a parade. Their salute is authentic when their 80-year-old bodies stand respectfully, rigidly at attention during the playing of our National Anthem. Their insistence on exercising their right to vote, no matter the weather, the distance to the polling place, or their disgust at the current state of politics in this country; all of this is recognized among them. And why? Because it's our Country...Their Country.
I guess one doesn't have to be within the borders of our nation to feel this national pride on the 4th of July, or on any date for that matter. When you view fireworks tomorrow night, say an "oooohh" and an "aaahh!" for us. When you worship at Our Savior's and include prayers of gratitude for our nation's democracy, know that we are praying with you. And when you see a military servant, or a veteran, thank them on behalf of all of us for their unselfish contribution. May God bless America...and in return...may America bless God!
See you in Church,
Pastor Steve

| | This Sunday, join us for Part 2 of a two week sermon series on PRAYER. Last week we focused on Jesus' prayer on our behalf from John 17, the OTHER Lord's Prayer. Knowing that Jesus prays for us, Pastor Linda challenged you to write a ONE WORD prayer to take with you during the week.
This week we will look at the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples and hear that Jesus tells us to ASK for what we need. Are you ready? See you in church!
