Lester F. Goodchild, PhD
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Les Goodchild, Dis ti ngu i shed Prof essor of International and Comparative Education at University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Pr ofessor Emeritus from Santa Clara University in California. Le s was an ASHE member more than 30 years. He was just awarded the CAHEP Distinguished Service Award at our Denver conference for his numerous contributions to the Council through the years, with particular emphasis on his formation of the CAHEP Early Career Workshop, now in its 8th year at the ASHE Conference.
 
In the 2006-2007 academic year, Les served as Dean of the School of Education at Santa Clara. Prior to that, he was Dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Professor of Higher Education. He also served as Interim Dean and Associate Professor of Education at the University of Denver. He began his academic career as Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Iowa State University and Director of Suburban Campuses at DePaul University in Chicago during the late 1980s. In addition, Dr. Goodchild has been a visiting professor or scholar at Penn State University, Boston College, and the University of California, Berkeley.
 
Les specialized in the history of higher education, public policy, administration, professional ethics, as well as international and comparative education. Last year, Les published a two-series edited volume titled Higher Education in the American West, 1818 to the Present. (Palgrave MacMillan, 2014).One volume spans two hundred years of history, while its companion focuses on clarifying seven key public policy challenges facing higher education in the West today.

Dr. Goodchild has a B.A. in Sociology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota; a M.A. in Religious Studies from Indiana University; a M.Div. from St. Meinrad School of Theolo
gy in Southern Indiana; and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
 
Les was filled with boundless energy, a love for higher education, and a joy for mentoring. He recently retired to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he passed after a short illness. Les will be missed by all of us in ASHE.
