Research Newsbrca
Research reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology suggests that because BRCA gene mutation status impacts survival and treatment response, all women with nonmucinous ovarian cancer, regardless of family history, should be offered BRCA1 and 2 mutation testing.

In the study, researchers from the Peter MacCullum Cancer Center in Australia screened 1,001 women with ovarian cancer to investigate the impact of germ-line BRCA1 and 2 mutations. "Our findings," write the authors, "suggest changes in the guidelines for genetic testing of all invasive ovarian cancer patients, indicate that the measurement of BRCA status should be explicitly integrated into future clinical trial designs as a major stratification factor, and declare BRCA status is now ready to be included in the clinical management of women with ovarian cancer." On June 21st, OCRF presented the third in our new series of free educational webinars, with Dr. Jeff Boyd's updates from the recent annual meetings of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

OCRF's webinar series, supported by Genentech, will be on hiatus until September, when Dr. Steve Rubin will present "Managing Ovarian Cancer Recurrence." Until then, you can catch up on any webinars you may have missed on our archive page

OCRF Fundraising All-Starsstars
Brett Thomas
On June 24th, Brett Thomas put his training to the test as he took on the challenging and picturesque Ironman Coeur D'Alene in memory of his mother-in-law, Jeanette "Jay" Trotter. His 21st triathlon overall, the race in Idaho represented Brett's first at Ironman distance, consisting of an arduous 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run. He became inspired to try a tri in 2006, after his wife, Pam Thomas, began racing as part of OCRF Team Hope in the U.S. Women's Triathlon Series--now the Toyota SheROX Triathlon Series. Seven years later, Pam and her team, "Total KAOS Tri Team" have raised more than $15,000 in honor of her mother through their dedicated participation. And in his first fundraising effort, Brett has raised $2,065 for OCRF in Jay's memory. "Her final gift to me is triathlon, and the fitness, health and friendships that come with the sport," says Brett. OCRF offers our sincere thanks and gratitude to this amazing duo for all they are doing to help further the mission to eradicate ovarian cancer, and a special congratulations to Brett on completing this incredible challenge!
