Dear Friend,

We hope you'll take a moment to read about what's happening here at DC Habitat and learn about upcoming events. As always, we thank our volunteers, donors and other supporters for their ongoing commitment to our work in the nation's capital.
Women Build Day : Uniting for Affordable Housing
This past Mother's Day, twenty women came together and volunteered their time to the construction of decent, affordable housing in the Ivy City and Deadwood neighborhoods. The women celebrated the 21st annual build week by applying fresh coats of paint on our rehab houses, installing wood flooring on the new construction units, and working on the Empowerhouse, the passive solar home designed for the 2011 Solar Decathlon.  As in previous years, women of all ages participated together with a few of our homeowners in improving housing in the District.
Women Build is a program that is typically held the week leading up to Mother's Day, underscoring the affordable housing crisis faced by many families with children around the world. Local affiliates teach women different aspects of constructing a home, tool usage, and tips. Since 1991, Women Build events have helped in the construction of more than 1,900 homes across the nation.
Art for Humanity Raises Awareness and Funds
On Thursday, March 29, nearly 250 Habitat supporters showed up at Woolly Mammoth Theatre in downtown DC to attend our first-ever 'Art for Humanity Auction & Cocktail Reception.'  Featuring a collection of artworks by prominent contemporary artists from DC and around the country, as well as musical entertainment by the Washington Jazz Arts Institute Ensemble, this first major benefit was a resounding success.

The event garnered a great deal of exposure for DC Habitat and the organization's affordable housing mission. Emceed by ABC7/WJLA-TV political anchor Scott Thuman, the event was also covered by the Washington Post, Bloomberg News, Bisnow and DC Magazine, among many others. Attendees got the chance to hear from Lakiya Culley, a future DC Habitat homeowner, as well as Peggy Cooper Cafritz, who received an award for her numerous contributions to the arts and education here in our nation's capital.

DC Habitat also auctioned off paintings, sculptures and other works from more than 30 artists, including some well-known names like William Wegman, Terence Koh, Artis Lane, Frederico Uribe and Shepard Fairey.  A number of works were also donated by well-known local artists, including Dana Ellyn, Victoria Gaitan, Rosetta DeBerardinis and Mei Mei Chang.

Proceeds from the auction of artworks will go towards DC Habitat's construction of affordable homes for low-income families in the Ivy City community of Northeast DC, including six ultra-efficient passive townhomes. DC Habitat offers special thanks to those who joined on as corporate sponsors for the 2012 event, including artnet auctions, Blue Moon, City First Bank of DC, the Coca-Cola Company, the DC Habitat Ambassadors, PNC, Sparking Design, US Airways and Zavos Architecture & Design.

DC Habitat Celebrates World Environment Day,
Showcases 'Green' Projects

The District of Columbia was named North American Host City for  this year's World Environment Day event, which was sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) - and on June 2, DC Habitat played co-host to World Environment Day events at the Empowerhouse site in Northeast DC.

Together with Empowerhouse team members from Parsons the New School for Design, and Stevens Institute of Technology,DC Habitat and DDOE opened up the home-under-construction for public tours. The morning's event was launched with a welcome by DC Habitat President & CEO Susanne Slater, followed with remarks by Senator Paul Strauss, DDOE Director Christophe Tulou and several students.

"This project is an example of what great work can be done when government agencies (like the DC Department of Housing and Community Development) partner with non-profit organizations, corporations and educational institutions," said Slater.

Tulou praised the Empowerhouse project for its success in building the District's first net-zero passive home and explained the many ways in which Washington has become a leader in sustainability initiatives.  DC has been named the country's second most walkable city (after Boston) and recently surpassed Chicago to become the nation's leader in green roof construction.

During the afternoon of June 2, students from the Empowerhouse team led a series of workshops for the public on the passive house model, solar technologies and low-impact development. Nearly 150 people came to the site over the course of the day.
