Be Wary of Bills that will Cut Social Security Benefits
(Not) Making Ends Meet on SSI
More older Americans are being pushed into poverty as they grow older-finding it impossible to pay rent, buy food and medicine, and keep the lights on.Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) just introduced a bill that would cut social security benefits to most older adults. Roughly 70% of beneficiaries would see cuts under the plan. The bill, the so-called "Social Security Reform Act of 2016," proposes a varied menu of ways to cut benefits.

Our friends at the Massachusetts Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (MANHR) are running a crowd-sourced fundraising campaign to support their ongoing advocacy efforts and we wanted to share that information with you. For 16 years, MANHR, the only consumer group advocating for nursing home residents in the State, has been fighting for better care, establishment of family councils, support to families and loved ones in need of help and so many other important resident-related issues. As you may remember, NAELA recently awarded Arlene Germain, the co-founder of MANHR, the Arthur Stavisky Award for promoting elder causes in the community. Given the continued challenges to residents in nursing homes - especially the push by the industry to eliminate protections - we need MANHR now more than ever. We encourage you to donate to MANHR and also share the link via email and social media (e.g. Facebook) as the more people who support MANHR the better.
