Profiles in Greatness

William M. Ashby
(10/15/1889 - 5/17/1991)

William M. Ashby, a fighter for civil rights for more than nine decades, was New Jersey's first black social worker.  Mr. Ashby applied to Yale University and, in 1916, received a degree in divinity. After graduating from Yale, Ashby was hired as a social worker. Soon after, he joined the Urban League, founding the branches in Newark and Elizabeth. He was its leader for ten years. Ashby also served in various positions with the Newark NAACP, the Newark Human Rights Commission, the Newark Senior Citizens Commission, and the New Jersey Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.
NASW-NJ is proud to honor the memory of William M. Ashby, a civil rights and social work pioneer and a past recipient of the NASW-NJ President's Award.

Social Work Month is March 2017 Social Workers Stand Up!
Social Workers Stand Up
NASW will launch a "Social Workers Stand Up" campaign during Social Work Month in March 2017. The campaign will focus on educating the public about how social workers stand up for others, including some of the most vulnerable people in our society, and make positive contributions to society. The campaign will also highlight the importance of the social work title, and why getting the assistance of an educated and licensed social worker is so important. Look for more details about the campaign to be posted here.
