A Message from
Executive Director Walter Kalman

A Labor Day Message
As we plunge into our the final days of summer and our Labor Day activities this weekend, let us take a moment to remember why this was holiday was created. Today the middle class has been buffeted by the replacement of secure pensions with volatile 401(k) plans, the concentration of wealth in the wealthiest 1% of the population, and the ever increasing cost of living. For those of even lower incomes the picture is even more bleak. If you work 40 hours a week you shouldn't have a problem affording food, child care, medical, housing, transportation and other expenses. As President Obama has pointed out, since 1990, more than 120 jurisdictions across the country have enacted living wage laws.

Social workers deserve a living wage sufficient to providing them with the necessities and comforts they need to achieve an acceptable standard of living. We deserve proper compensation for the services provided by those in private practice. The security of an adequate retirement in the richest nation on the planet is not an unreasonable expectation. This is what the labor movement  has fought for in the over 100 years in which this holiday has been celebrated. We need to reflect on this history and make our voices heard as agents of change, as we view an ever more challenging landscape before us.

The 45th Anniversary Gala
The advent of fall brings us to our annual membership and Board installation dinner, bigger and more significant than ever. On October 24, at the Galloping Hill Golf Club in Kenilworth, we will celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the New Jersey chapter of NASW. This is the premiere of our new partner in promoting the Social Work profession in New Jersey, the hosts of the Gala, the NJ Social Work Education, Research and Scholarship Corporation (NJ SWERS).

The partnership between NJ SWERS and NASW-NJ is all about the future of the Social Workers and the Social Work profession in New Jersey. We want you all to come out for the dinner, and sponsor or obtain sponsorships and contributions from your agencies, family, friends and colleagues, to support this historic partnership that will promote Social Work and Social Workers through its work. These tax-deductible contributions are an investment in your careers and in promoting our profession, and can only succeed from your efforts.

Register for the Gala, sign up for ads/sponsorship, and make your contributions here.
