Message from Executive Director Walter Kalman

NASW Response to Minnesota, Louisiana, and Texas

Like our colleagues in other states, we at NASW-NJ were appalled by the events of recent weeks. Shootings such as those of Alton Sterling, Philandro Castile and 12 police officers in Dallas have no place in a civilized society.

We grieve the deaths and deplore the injuries that were caused by gunfire in three different states. We join NASW National in its message to our Members:

NASW is appalled by the police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile and again urges reforms that would help end racial profiling and excessive use of police force and improve relations between police and the communities they serve.

It is also important that we express how deeply NASW is upset about the tragic shooting deaths of five Dallas police officers and the wounding of seven other police. Those deaths are made more tragic by the fact that the Dallas police and the protestors had formed a collaboration to ensure that the march was peaceful. It is gratifying to learn that the shooting of the policemen had no association with the protestors who were responding to the deaths of Alton Sterling or Philando Castile.

NASW recommends that members of the social work profession, which has a long history of pushing for social justice, to work for reforms in the nation's law enforcement system.  To read the entire article, click here

CE & The Arts: Volunteers Needed

Soon we will be announcing a year-long schedule of events for "CE and The Arts," one of our very popular Continuing Education programs.

For those not familiar with the program, we teach about Social Work themes through the use of theater and film. Social workers come together to view a film or play, which is followed by a lecture or panel and facilitated discussion.

This year we began to introduce the use of other forms of performance art with a concert by the Music For People Improv Orchestra at the Annual Meeting of the Profession/CE Conference in Atlantic City.

Volunteers who have an interest in the arts and would like to be involved in finding and selecting programs, identifying presenters or personally presenting the educational component of a program, are encouraged to send an e-mail to info@naswnj.org with the subject line "CE and The Arts."
