Smile! The Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) at New York Medical College commemorated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting celebration on September 28 on the portico of its home, 19 Skyline Drive - a milestone event for New York State's first new dental school in 50 years and the first dental school under Jewish auspices outside of the state of Israel. Touro and NYMC leadership, along with students, staff and faculty, joined local and regional elected officials and dental industry leaders including Carol Gomez Summerhays, D.D.S., president of the American Dental Association, for the afternoon festivities. SOM Hosts Second Annual Diversity and Inclusion Conference
 The School of Medicine's Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted its Second Annual Diversity and Inclusion Conference on September 19. This year's theme was "Considering Diversity in Equitable Health Care."

Dr. Butts explained the evolution, design and priority focus areas of a model academic health system diversity program, and expressed that the approach to diversity in such systems is not an overnight process, but requires the commitment of several stakeholders. SOM Recognizes Three Decades of Lectures on Clinical Aspects of Staph and Strep Infections
 For more than three decades second-year NYMC medical students in the medical microbiology course have benefitted from the knowledge, wisdom and good sense of guest lecturer
Henry M. Frey, M.D., left, who presents on clinical aspects of staph and strep infections each year in the early fall.
Jan Geliebter, Ph.D., right, professor of microbiology and immunology and otolaryngology and course director for medical microbiology, was pleased to recognize Dr. Frey for his dedication with a plaque presentation prior to the lecture on September 28. Dr. Frey received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Harvard University and then worked for NASA where he worked as an aerospace engineer on space shuttle engine design. A change of heart led him to medical school at New York University School of Medicine, followed by an internship and residency in pediatrics and an infectious disease fellowship at NYU where he was awarded the Bristol Fellowship by the Infectious Disease Society of America. Dr. Frey recently retired from private practice in pediatrics and pediatric/adult infectious diseases. He served as chief of infectious diseases at St. Joseph's Medical Center and chief of staff at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y. Dr. Frey's accomplishments include diverse publications ranging from "CCR-5 Genotype and Resistance to Vertical Transmission of HIV-1" to "Kinetic Performance of Barrier-Cooled Rocket Nozzles."

NYMC Is a Founding Member of the Nationwide High Value Practice Academic Research Alliance
 NYMC has joined the ranks of more than 30 academic institutions as members of the High-Value Practice Academic Research Alliance (HVPARA), a consortium working to advance high-value medical practice through collaboration, research, innovation and education. A key element of the HVPARA will be its annual National Research Symposium. The inaugural National Research Symposium of the High-Value Practice Academic Research Alliance, will take place on October 9, 2017 in Baltimore, sponsored by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The symposium will include abstract presentations demonstrating evidence of cost reduction in concert with patient care quality improvement, educational lectures from leaders in high-value care and best-practice presentations including Rita Redberg, M.D., professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco and editor-in-chief of JAMA International, Chris Moriates, M.D., assistant dean for healthcare value at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin, and Richard Duszak, M.D., vice chair of health policy and practice, Department of Radiology at Emory University. The Flu Vaccine is Now Available in Health Services
 The seasonal flu vaccine is now available at the Office of Health Services located in the Basic Sciences Building for full-time students and employees.
No appointment is necessary, however the nurse practitioner is not available between the hours of 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Members of the School of Medicine Class of 2019, Britny Keith, center, Benjamin Mann, left, and Suraj Parikh, who were awarded New York Academy of Medicine 2016 student award grants in June, presented the findings of their summer research at the New York Academy of Medicine's 2016 Medical and Dental Student Forum on August 18. Mr. Mann and Mr. Parikh, both recipients of Ferdinand C. Valentine Student Research Grants in Urology presented "Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in Male Stress Urinary Incontinence" and "Exploration of Renoprotective Mechanisms of Antioxidants in Oxidative Renal Cell Injury," respectively. Ms. Keith, recipient of a Glorney-Raisbeck Medical Student Grant in Cardiovascular Research, presented "Survivors of Childhood Cancer Face Multiple Health Problems."
